3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 GregClow (2740) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - APR 18, 2011
Bottle shared with jerc & mabel - Dec 22/08. Orange-red with a wispy head. Aroma is sweet (dark sugar & dried fruit) and warm, that 10% making itself quite obvious. Flavour follows the aroma - i.e. dark sugar and dried fruit being the predominant notes, with enough hops in the finish to take off the edge without adding any notable bitterness. A decent barley wine.

Reviewed from notes.
Poured into a snifter. Color is moderate copper with a thin white head that remains for a bit. Nose brings a good dose of sweet malt along with some light fruits and caramel. The taste is a bit too sweet without enough accompanying fruit presence. Feel is a bit cloying. Drinks well enough overall, but is just too sweet.

Cask pour. Interesting flavor for a BW. Malty sweet and fruity like a West Coast Stout. Hardly shows the 10% ABV. One of the more drinkable BW’s I’ve had.

Split bottle with Chalsk. Agree with his statement that this is underrated. Pours a dark amber. Aroma is roastyness, caramel and nuts. Taste is sweet and some muted bitters. Solid.

Very underated IMO. Pours a burnt orange color with a foamy caramel colored head. Has a sweet caramel taste with some nice bitters. Malty but balances the abv well. Not a malt bomb. Tasty. Thanks to Leafs93 for this one.

Vintage 2010. 22 oz. bomber poured into a snifter. Pours a deep reddish copper color with a foamy tan head that dissipates quickly to a thin layer and lasts throughout. Fair lacing. Aroma is caramel malt and dark fruits. Flavor is sweet malt, caramel, raisins, and some roasted notes all balanced by an earthy hop bitterness. Slight warming finish. Medium to full bodied. Medium carbonation.

R.F.D., DC tap 10oz ($7): Pours a dark red/brown color. Aroma of sugary malts and fruits. Not so complex, but in its lack of complexity, it has plenty of drinkability. Pretty sweet. At times tastes like a one-dimensional Belgian ale, but it is a little too thick for that of course. Alcohol is well-covered. Overall. for what it is, it’s pretty good. They should make it in 40s.

Bomber->snifter: Pours a very thin, white, rocky head atop a dark, opaque, brown body. Aroma of caramel and chocolate with some carbonation being released. Moderately sweet on the palate, medium bodied, caramel-y in taste, and a dry finish. Pretty nice for a barley wine.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 pottygok (365) - Ohio, USA - JAN 27, 2011
Aroma: Caramel and bread malts with a doughy aroma as well. Very pleasant.
Appearance: Opaque brown with orange where the light penetrates at the edges. Thick white head that dissipates quickly.
Taste: Medium to heavy sweetness, very light sourness and a hint of saltiness at the very finish.
Palate: Full bodied, slick texture, soft carbonation with a LOOONG finish.
Overall: Pretty standard, with some excessive maltiness, especially in the finish. Everything’s working here, but I’m not overwhelmed or wowed enough to want to run out and buy more.
