COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big DIPA – Double IPA
Hops: Centennial, Amarillo
Malts: American 2-Row, Crystal, Biscuit
ABV: 10.6%
IBU: 75.5

Big DIPA – Double IPA, is the first in the Heavy Seas Special Edition Series due to be released in mid June. Hopped 3 times in the brewing process, Big DIPA has an earthy hop aroma. In keeping with the Heavy Seas philosophy we’ve made a big beer with a surprising balance. The best part is that you’ll hardly notice it’s 10.6% ABV (est). The label artwork was created by Kurt Krol, one of our brewers who also helped to develop the recipe.

I’ve slated biscuit malt in the past but this one showed me how its used right as a backdrop for hoppy assertiveness which comes in the form of two of my favorite hops. But, I swear the hop quotient is more IPA than DIPA and the malts deliver the high abv. This one has a slightly tea-like finish to it which kind of dampers the exuberance. Picked this up at Chips in OBX.

On cask at Frisco Grille. Amber color with no head. Fruit and Citrus aroma. Caramel malt flavor with fruit notes. Citrus hop finish. Being on cask it was flatter than the bottled version.

22oz poured into a pint glass. Pour is a clear amber color with a bisquit colored head. Aromas are subtle for such a big beer, but there are definite malty notes and some hoppiness on the nose. Taste is a very malt forward DIPA with some bitterness, but mostly boozy and malt is what I get. The hops could be more forward to bitter the finish. Not much of a finish, quite abrupt. Overall and OK DIPA, but many better ones are out there.

Bottle split with mcberko. Pours ruby red/orange with a thin white lacing. Aroma of tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango, resin, and caramel or candied sugar. Flavour of tropical fruits, lots of caramel, resin, and slight booze. Sweet and smooth to start, with a gorgeous hop finish. Full bodied and complex.

22 oz. bottle, sent from Glouglouburp, split with Matts_Property, pours hazy dark golden orange with a small off-white head. Aroma of resinous hops, floral notes, light grapefruit (and maybe other fruits), backed by a big caramel malt backbone. Flavour brings out some candied sugar to begin with, heaps of caramel, tropical fruits, ending with pungent resinous hops. Great layers and depth in this IIPA, though maybe a little boozy on the finish. Excellent.

Good beer. Nothing out of the norm for a double IPA. Finishes kinda weak.

12oz bottle-thanks decaturstevo for sharing-pours a dissipating light tan head and hazy amber color. Aroma is resin/perfumy, dark fruit, sweet medium malt-caramel. Tase is resin/perfumy/spice hops bite, dark fruit, sweet medium malt-caramel. Slightly syrup/thick mouth feel. BW-ish.

i hate to make regional comparisons, but I’m going to be honest - Big DIPA is definitely cut from same cloth as DFH 90. This is a prime example of the big and malty sweet East Coast DIPA with hops to burn. The only real difference I taste here is the extra 1.5% ABV. Aroma, however, is a different story. I’m getting some citrus zest here, but it’s mostly boozy. Appearance is one of the nicest I’ve ever seen - lovely deep amber/brown color with head and lacing for days. Palate is nice, especially for a 10.5% beer. Would drink again.

22oz bottle from a trade with tripphop on BA. A pillowy white head rests a top a bright amber in color beer with some orange highlights. Very mild orange citrus aroma. As it warms caramel appears in the aroma, and becomes quite pronounced. Sweet caramel, some candied oranges, slight fresh orange and grapefruit, and some bitterness in the finish. Medium to heavy bodied, and really just as big as the 10% abv suggest.
