3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 nwiseman (192) - West Lafayette, Indiana, USA - OCT 23, 2010
Pours the color of coke with a medium tan foamy head. Aroma has some sour apple and candy sugar with spice. Sweet with the heartiness of apple cider. A decent amount of heat from alcohol and some bitterness as it goes down. Not quite what I was expecting, but a decent beer nonetheless.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Brigadier (1940) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - OCT 22, 2010
22 oz bottle
As the collection of Heavy Seas releases spawns a new shelf in the cellar I tried to keep it at bay by opening this. My reward was an affordably priced top notch weizenbock which falls somewhere on the spectrum of beers that can comfortably be finished alone in a night. If not for the others I would be getting another bottle very soon before it disappears from the shelves.
Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy caramel and bronze body was warm in the light of the hazy sunset. Whitish tufts of head floated on the top like crests of waves hitting the shoreline. Creamy and fluid it was thick without oozing. Caramel, molasses, toffee, and chocolate bring to mind a decadent dessert bar. Black licorice is the topper that adds depth without creating a muddled and confused collection of tastes.
Flavor / Palate - Chocolate, caramel, molasses, and sugar cookie mix into a texture that brings to mind a harvest festival. Slightly boozy after a few sips it warms the tongue and throat. Unlike unbalanced beers it does so without overwhelming the depth. Solid and affordable this one has landed squarely on the list of "go to budget beers" if I ever need to scale back purchasing the rarer stuff at some point.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Travlr (5419) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - OCT 15, 2010
Draft at Elephant & Castle. Medium brown, clear, small tan head. Aroma of caramel, taste is malty with a decent bitter finish. Not bad.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Indra (2361) - Overland Park, Kansas, USA - OCT 11, 2010
12oz. bottle, best by date of Dec. 2010. Spicy, sweet aroma, full of caramel, dough and clove, with lighter notes of banana, licorice, toasty malt, raisin and a faint medicinal alcohol presence. Cloudy, dark amber-brown color with a fine, off-white head. Flavor profile is tangy, fruity, sweet and moderately bitter, with a spicy yeast and hop character, finishing dry and peppery with tea-like herbal tinges and mild alcohol. Mouthfeel is sharply effervescent, lightly coating and warming, body is full but not overly so. When I consumed the first of these, I drank it fairly cold and not with much care, not realizing it was 10%. As it warms, this becomes more apparent. Interesting stuff, not particularly refined but certainly has some likable features.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 arone12 (776) - Maryland, USA - OCT 8, 2010
Pours a brownish color with an off white head. Smells instantly of dates, plums, molasses, and apples. Taste is fairly sweet. I taste apples, molasses and malty goodness in that order. The finish is with what some people might call "dark" fruits (plums and grapes). Overall, this beer is actually quite good. And the label on this beer is pretty different. Good stuff.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 scottw86 (909) - Maryland, USA - OCT 1, 2010
Poured a very dark brown with a bubbling off-white head. Aroma is quite fruity for a weizen bock. Wheat also in the aroma with caramel and some yeast. Taste is quite good! Very similar to dark wheat beers from Germany. Good wheat flavors with some banana and fruit. Alcohol is noticeable, but it isn’t too bad. Finish is slightly sweet with fruit. Enjoyable and tasty!
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Gachupines (498) - USA - SEP 24, 2010
Cloudy brown appearance with an off white head. Aroma is yeast and a little fruity. Slightly musty but not in an unpleasant way. Flavor is strong yeast with a sweet, slightly alcohol burn to it. Rather nice but not quite amazing.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 tastybeer (1055) - Washington DC, USA - AUG 31, 2010
Bottlle. Pours deep brown/ruby with a big tan head. Flavor of soy sauce, sticky buns, caramel, and booze. Not impressed.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 GT2 (4012) - Washington DC, USA - AUG 28, 2010
Pours a clear ruby the a decent off-white head. Smells like soy sauce on top of cheesecake that was meant to be refrigerated but was left out for 2 days. Tastes like a 2L of creme soda from Wal-Mart was inserted into your stomach. Later it tastes like someone was served peanut brittle for dessert with soy sauce dizzled over it. Much later it will tastes like tea that been teabagged into some septic water.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 bhensonb (7598) - Woodland, California, USA - AUG 28, 2010
Bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours very dark amber with a small tan head. Smells like barley wine - brown shugga! Near full bodied with foamy carbonation. Flavor is confusin - brown sugar, hop, and something yeasty/spicey? I can’t find the words. It is really sharp flavored and delicious. Don’t hesitate to try this.
