Thin head from a rather vigorous pour. Wonderful aroma with loads of smoked sausage, thick malts, beef jerky and some wood. Sniffing this makes you want to go and grill a big juicy steak. Color is a slightly hazy dark crimson brown. Flavor is a bit weaker than expected. More smoked meat, peat, roasted malts and a slightly astringent finish. The finish is throwing me for a loop. A bit more body and this would be a fine scotch ale except for the finish which seems to be out of character for an old ale. A pretty good brew none-the-less.

Brown body with some sediment, off-white head. Alcohol is prominent in the aroma,. The flavor follows the aroma somewhat. A bit sweet and one dimensional.

Lots of yeast. Looks a little like yeast soup, actually. Smells kinda boozy, and tastes kinda boozy, as well. I did a good bit of German Chocolate, too.

Brown pour with chunky lumps of yeast. Tan head. Sweet caramel malt and hard resin. Sweet malt and a light resiny malt. Medium body with good carbonation

22 ounce bottle, poured an amber color, aroams of licorics, roasted malt, some wood, and caramel. Flavor si the same with a touch of dried dark fruit and roasted coconut comming through. A real nice beer overall.

(22oz bottle, courtesy of blutt59) Pours a clear deep amber body with a medium beige head. Aroma of caramel, toasted coconut, licorice, chocolate, roasted malt, bread, and wood. Flavor of caramel, roasted malt, wood, and raisins.

Sample at Night of the Barrels (EBF) - towards the end of the night so this was not quite as coherent as others. Brick red with a biege head. Quite sweet with lots of fruit and vanilla/caramel, some wood, smoke malts; moderate body and carbonation - did not particularly enjoy the feel on the palate though.

Murky brown with a beige head, just from the smell, expect this to be big and malty. Indeed, it is! Full and round butterscotch flavor coats everything. Decidedly on the sweet side of things, but the hops cut through at just the right time to bring some balance. Hints of cherry and vanilla are there and a certain wood-like quality in the finish. Though I’m wondering if I would notice it if I didn’t know to expect it. Big flavor, creamy mouthfeel, not overly bitter. Complex and tasty flavors. Plank I is a winnerrrr!

Poured into a snifter. Old ale on poplar? Yes, please. 3.5 A: Clear with a deep crimson brown color. Two fingers of creamy tan head. Retention is about average and just the smallest touch of lacing is left. 4.0 S: Very pleasant nose. Dark caramel malts, plum, prune, fig, and date fruitiness, and brown sugar. The poplar isn’t as intense as I would have imagined, but it does complement the brew. Sweet, but balanced. Booze is well hidden. 3.0 T: Hmmm. This isn’t what I was expecting. The poplar takes control of the brew and adds more astringency that I’d like. In addition, the sweetness perceived in the nose is much reduced in the taste. In any case, this is still tasty, it just doesn’t impress much. Underneath the poplar, there is the fruitiness, brown sugar, and caramel found in the nose, but at lower levels of intensity. 3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. A bit creamy, but could be more so. Not bad here. 3.5 D: Interesting experiment, but the base beer couldn’t really stand up to the poplar contribution. Still, not bad.
