On Cask at the 6th Annual Winking Lizard Cask Ale Festival on 3/22/14. Dark brown in color with a medium tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, caramel, dark cherry and oak. Malt and dark fruit flavor with chocolate and roast before a liquer finish.

Cask version at Winking Lizard’s 6th Annual Real Ale Fest (03/22/14) (on White Oak): Brownish-black color with a thin tan head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Strings of lacing on the glass. Roasted malt, coffee and oak in the nose. Medium body with flavors of charred malt, coffee and and subtle oak. The finish is roasty with a mocha and oak aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Pours a thick black brown color with a puffy brown head. Notes of molasses, cola, smoke, dark chocolate, vanilla, and wood. Decently thick mouthfeel and lasting finish. Nice

Cask at Mac’s - Steele Creek in Charlotte on 9/21/10. Reviewed from notes. Poured an absolute pitch black. Very viscous and thick looking. No head at all. I guess that’s expected as the carbonation is lower with cask ales. No lace. The nose had notes of vanilla, oak, nuts, chocolate. Light bourbon on the finish. The flavor is pretty tame here. This is extremely watered-down in my opinion. Very light roasted quality. Light vanilla sweetness. Bourbon was absent. No aftertaste. No finish. This was weak. Very disappointing. The mouth was thinner than expected, but that could be the cask. Again, this is my first experience and I’m not sure what to expect. Drinkability was hindered for sure with the flavor. This was really weak and tame. Barely finished the one.

Gravity cask. Pours dark brown with some minimal carbonation. Smells of chocolate, vanilla, some spicy hints. Tastes of oak, chocolate, some vanilla hints, some cognac on the finish. Enjoyable.

On cask at Doherty’s Pub. Oak, bourbon and dark chocolate in the aroma, vanilla, faint roast and cherry. Opaque black color with a nicely lasting, foamy hed. Flavor is likewise slightly sweet and full of dark chocolate and bourbon, with lighter aspects of wood, vanilla, coconut, alcohol and berryish fruitiness. Some roast late, not much in the way of bitterness, though, from any angle. Very smooth feel (cask) and bittersweet finish, body is medium-full. Good, but kinda heavy on the bourbon. This would likely benefit from some blending.

Draft at Churchkey. Nearly black, fluffy brown head. Aroma of Jack Daniels. Taste has tons of whiskey and some light chocolate. Medium to light body. Too much whiskey.

An old rating found on my phone. Served on cask at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a brown color with a medium brown head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, wood and caramel. The taste is sweet roasted malts, peppery wood notes, caramel and whisky. Smooth and medium bodied. Nice beer.
