COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
At Heavy Seas, we brew a traditional English-style pale ale with our own East Coast twist: UK Fuggles and Goldings dominate the flavor of Powder Monkey, but has subtle notes of citrus and flower from Cascade hops added in the boil and hopback. Brass in color, Powder Monkey, like all of our beers, is well balanced: distinct bitterness and a slight malt sweetness characterize the taste. In 2010, it won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup; in 2008, it won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

Dark amber with a one finger head and modest lace. Aromas of toast, caramelized malts, honey, dark fruit and some grassy hops. Taste is similar, mostly sweet caramel and toast with only a whiff of bitters. Light to medium body, minimal carbonation, thin mouthfeel and a sweetish finish.

Thin frothy white head of fine bubbles. Light orange and citrus aroma with some light cereal grains and biscuits. Color is a dark copper. Thin palate and flavor. Tea, light roasted grains, grapefruit pith and lemon. And a rather astringent and harsh late bitterness which is making the underside of my tongue tingle. Needs more of a malt backbone to offset the bitterness. An ok but unbalanced pale ale.

Of the three heavy seas beers ice tries so far, this is the one so far that seems like a let down. Better than most American lagers, but otherwise I would not necessarily reach for it.
