This beer is brewed in the Belgian Saison style (country farm house ale). A potent yet delicate ale, brewed with a unique Belgian yeast which develops a spicy, fruity flavor. Enormously complex. Available from May to around August.

12 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours an absolutely beautiful amber color. The head is a two finger white shade. Its texture is creamy, and it fades away relatively quick. Lacing is streaky at first, but becomes more sheetlike as the head goes away. Itís not really saison like in appearance - even so, this is damn gorgeous. S: This has a lot in the way of candied sugar and phenols. Notes of coriander and sage are also present, but otherwise, this one seems too sweet for the style. T: Ayup, too damn sweet. An initial taste of phenols gives way to some mild spicing...and hardly mild candied sugar. Not only is it rather sugary, but the finish is a bit boozy. Nothing too harsh, though. M: Syrupy, under-carbonated, hefty, lifeless - everything I DONíT want from a saison. Drinkability isnít great, either, but by no means is it completely undrinkable. O: Look, itís not really a bad BSPA at all. Itís just a bad saison: the only characteristic Heavy Seas got right is the spice flavor, and thatís simply too mild. Not only is it too sweet for a saison, itís too sweet for a regular Belgian pale ale. I donít plan to revisit this one.

bottled - Belgiany flavor and aroma. Orange-amber in color. Definitely drinkable, but not as good as expected - probably should try it again in the summer.

DATE TASTED: February 8, 2015... GLASSWARE: La Fin du Monde tulip... OCCASION: watching the Grammys and waiting for more inclement weather... APPEARANCE: cloudy, light yellow body; creamy off-white head settles to a reasonably bubbly half-inch; ... AROMA: instant lemon grass and bubble gum; pepper, clove, and a bevy of hop varietals to tantalize ... PALATE: quite drinkable, with a smooth, rum-like warmth and comfort; the finish is dry but welcoming and lingering...TASTE: a dramatically packed burst of hops that evoke flowers and lemongrass; bubblegum, clove and anise (?) complicate the experience in a good way, with each sip invoking consideration; fruits like pear and apple arrive late in a loaded plate ...OVERALL: this was the beer I took to the 2003 trip to OBX, and all as well until I found a claw (!) in a bottle; still, a fantastic beer for the summer--and, not bad in the months leading up to the spring...

Pours a pale amber body with a medium head. Faint aroma of dough. Malty taste with sugar tones. More like an ordinary belgian ale than a saison. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

[6626-20140815] Bottle. Yeasty fruity aroma is fresh and light. Clear, pale yellow orange body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. More apricot fruitiness in the flavour. Medium body. Average. (6/3/7/3/13) 3.2

12 oz bottle, poured into a tulip at approximately 50 degrees F. A: Pours a honey-straw gold and forms a two-finger white head, which has decent retention. The body of the beer is cloudy and hazy, though not so much that one cannot see bubbles streaming steadily from the bottom. The lacing was patchy, but clung thick where it did. S: Light bread with banana and clove, with Belgian candi sweetness. Thereís also some hints of something bubblegummy, and a light grassy note. T: An almost hefe-like profile of light wheat, clove, and banana strikes up front, and is swiftly cut into by a veritable jagged spiked wall of spicy, grassy bitter. Thereís a faint fruitiness underneath that, something like a pear or green apple, though it is mostly covered by the hopalanche. I donít get much funk or sour from this. M: Light-bodied and sharply carbonated. O: I would likely rate this beer a bit higher if it involved a bit less grassy hop bittering, and a bit more sourness / funkiness. As it stands, this drinks like an over-hopped hefeweizen.

Poured a hazy gold colour with a 1/2 inch head. Sweet aroma of banana, clove and citrus with encompassing notes of peppery spice. Very sweet and fruity malt flavor and tangy notes of yeast with intense spice. Medium bodied with light carbonation. One of my favorites from this brewery.

Heavy Seas Red Sky on cask at the 2014 Decatur Beer Festival. Off-white head over a slightly hazyboy; durable and creamy head. Reversing my usual reaction to saisons, this one smells better that it tastes. A load of wild yeasty flavors in the mouth. Some hint of vinegar in the nose. Highly complex flavor.
