This year’s Siren Noire Imperial Chocolate Stout has been revamped. We’ve aged it for three weeks in bourbon barrels, which gives the beer darker notes of raisin and fig. We’ve also tripled the amount of chocolate nibs and added vanilla bean. A mix of dark malts gives Siren Noire a well-rounded body that is decidedly chocolatey—but without being extraordinarily sweet. Mt. Hood hops contribute a fruity hop profile, with notes of black currant.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a fairly opaque dark chocolate with foamy beige head. Smells of chocolate, dark malt, vanilla, and light bourbon and fig. Tastes like it smells, but more chocolate! Nice and smooth on the palate. Great stuff.

Draft at Lavomatic. Pours a deep brown with a small khaki head that lasts as a ring. Plenty of dark and milk chocolate, dark fruits (berries, figs, dates), vanilla, oak, and molasses. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a really smooth mouthfeel. Doesn’t show a ton of bourbon barrel character, which I guess is a result of the short barrel aging. Good imperial stout.

Cask at ChurchKey poured into a tasting snifter. Pours dark brownish black with about a finger of tan head. Aromas of chocolate, caramel, toffee, bourbon. Tasting notes of chocolate, caramel, toffee, bourbon, light dark fruit. Kind of like a liquid Devil’s food cake. Medium-light body (possibly lighter than usual due to the cask version) with a semi-dry finish. Pretty smooth.

Bottle: The aroma consists of big chocolate, bourbon, maple syrup, vanilla, and a touch of mint. It pours a dark brown with a faint orange glow around the edges. It has a two finger beige head with good retention. There is some minimal thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate milk chocolate and light caramel. The finish has light-moderate maple syrup, bourbon, oak, light vanilla, and a touch of mint. It’s medium-full bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Overall, this is damn good. I’ll say it’s one of the better values out there ($7.99/bomber).

Bottle from Wineworks shared with my buds. Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, toffee, oak, and whoppers malt. Pours deep brown with medium fluffy white head. Taste is delicious with caramel chocolate, malty goodness. bourbon oak, and marshmallow. Very thin mouthfeel is the only thing keeping this from being world class. Great tasting brew. Gonna pick up another bottle if it’s still there.

On tap at Joe Canals West Deptford.
Appearance: Pitch black body with a short khaki head, the head dissipates into a soft coating with a tall ring on the edges.
Aroma: The aroma is complex and mildly sweet. I pick up chocolate, coconut and bourbon, but all are very well balanced, incredibly enjoyable but a bit weak in strength. What a shame!
Taste: Wow, what a complex and balanced stout. Chocolate and coconut are the big flavors I get here, like an almond joy. There’s a light overlying creamer/vanilla flavor and a subtle roasted coffee and a mild spice prickle presence on the finish. Very well done, this is a very nicely balanced barrel aged stout.
Palate: Thick and mildly carbonated.
Overall: This is one of the best bourbon barrel stouts that I’ve had. Lots of nuances and great balance. This is truly a treat!

Hmm...well I’m back for the updated version. I have to say, I’m not overwhelmed; I wanted to be blown away by this oak-aged stout, but there is something unfortunate going on--it doesn’t meld well. The flavors don’t harmoniously blend, but exist as distinct, separate elements. Not a horrible ale--yet--didn’t meet my relatively high expectations.
