COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Baltus, a hybrid style, is a top-fermented beer made with English floor malts, malted wheat and noble hops. A classic European yeast strain with a subtle yet discernable estery profile is employed. A warmer fermentation, followed by a period of cold conditioning serves to develop and refine this complex beer.

Plum color with lots of yeasties in suspension. Aroma is dominated by some raisin with a bit of brown sugar and bread. Flavor is sweet and bready - lots of sugar, dark fruit, and caramel/slightly sweet candy. Thinner mouthfeel. Good and unique, but this is mediocre relative to the better Heavyweight beers that were made.

July 2006 - I didn’t like it. If I knew it was supposed to be a Belgian Strong, I probably would have liked it less. This defies style...and is somewhat of a mess. Aroma smelled like sour wine. The flavor was a sour wine with sour butter. Flat mouthfeel (which I hate) and cloying. Distinctive (I’m trying to be positive), but flat out unpleasant.

12oz bottle, courtesy of Schutzenliesel. Thanks, Tom! Pours a murky, burnt caramel color; fluffy khaki-colored head with great retention and lacing. Pleasant, mildly tart aroma showing brown sugar, bananas, and a pleasant yeastiness; very nice aroma; some wheat. A bit of hard caramel at the front, but no over-the-top oxidation; slightly tart citrus and lively carbonation at the front; medium mouthfeel; red fruits, sweet brown sugar, and some doughiness; pleasant and drinkable. Medium, citrus and brown sugar finish; tasty stuff.

From a bottle. Pours a dark amber color. Aroma of sweet candied fruits, roasted malts and alittle bit of yeast. Decent brew, that seems to held up to time, since I have no idea how old this bottle is but its atleast 3 years old.

Draught: Aroma of nuts, caramel malts, floral hops, and raisin. Poured amber/brown in color with a small off-white head. No lacing. Cloudy. Full of tiny particles. Not sparkling. Flavor of sweet and sour sauce and some spices. Medium body. Sticky, thin texture. Soft to average carbonation. Dry finish. Sour, but not Lambic sour.

Thanks alot Beerbill this was a great belgian and boy was it strong. I got this in a trade and it had no head but a nice dark redish amber, and did have some minor laceing along the sides of the glass. The aroma is a nice sweet sugar cane and candy with roasted malt. As you take the first sip it fills your mouth with fruits, carmel malt and a nice creamy finish. I also liked the nice initial hoppy bite but faded a little more each time you take a sip.

Bottle from 2003 at Euology in Philly: pours a dark redish brown with no head, aroma is sweet with hints of alcohol, taste is of dark fruit, thin moutfeel, almost a bit watery, a slightly flat taste too. Still, a pretty good brew that seems to have held up reasonably well.

clear dark red, short lived whispy beige head, touch of lace, sweet candy malt aroma with some floral hops, creamy body, rich malt flavor, restrained sweetness, some nice fruity character of a lighter variety like grapes or apricots, light bitterness, great first beer of the weekend

Bottled. Poured a deep, syrupy, murky brown with a quickly-receding off-white head and some rising carbonation. The nose first found rich, toasty English caramel, less-prominent caramel, floral notes, and candied dark fruits. Flavor was rather strong with dark frutis and toffee.. accented by some alcohol warmth.. floral and mild peppery spices too. Syrupy and sweet on the palate, with a thicker body.. some sharper alcohol and oxidization evident, but still has some life left in it.. but probably best to drink ’em soon.
