Commercial Description:
The Gotland, or Viking beer has been extinct for some time... or has it? The ingredients: Smoked, pale, rye, wheat, and sour malts. Juniper, German hops, Blessed Thistle, Bog Myrtle, bread yeast, and birch bark... all aged in whisky wood. We bet you never tasted anything quite like it.

Bottle. Courtesy of Jimmack. Pours light brown with orange hues. The aroma of this beer is minty! If you really put your nose in it its a little like vicks(R). The flavor is sour, smoky minty, wheat and light fruit. It finishes crisp and clean i wonder if its the juniper berries. Really good and different!

Bottle shared by iowaherkeye. Thanks. Poured a clear medium orange color. The head consisted of a few small soap bubbles. Smelled of old shoe leather, subdued vinegar, and a hint of mint (ala menthol cigarettes). Medium bodied and minimally sweet with a hint of acidity and mild bitterness. Carbonation was on the low end of the spectrum. Earthy and spicy. Plenty of nonspecific spices I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Interesting beer.

joey again. WTF dick? Amber with no head. Leathery mint aroma. Flavor was minty, orange...pine, leather, peppery tobacco...menthol smokes? Finishes lightly tart, no carbonation. Wow, most interesting beer I’ve had in a goodish way.

750mL bottle, courtesy of meguiar on BA, Friday at BCTC. Thanks, Marie! Pours a hazy, golden-amber color; thin off-white head with patchy lacing. Loads of juniper, vanilla, and caramelized honey notes; slightly oxidized. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy brown sugar, licorice, and toasty vanilla; light carbonation; lots of licorice; slight caramel-tinged oxidation; messy, tasty beer at this point. Lengthy finish: licorice, honey, and toasted malts; lots of caramel. 7.3.7.3.14=3.4

750mL bottle, courtesy of jjpm74. Thanks, John! Pours a murky, orange-amber color; off-white head with patchy lacing. Solid amounts of dried caramel, chewy dried fruits, and messy sweet malts in the nose. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy, bready palate; lightly smoky presence; wheatiness, light smoke, and chewy candy sugar; a bit messy overall, but tasty maltiness and delicately smoked character. Lengthy finish: candy sugar, caramel, and soft brown sugar. 7.3.7.3.15=3.5

THOUGHTS: It was like nothing else I’d ever smelled. It was like something I would expect an ancient healer to make for someone who needed to go on a journey quest. It was a little like when I would, as a kid, mix orange juice, tea and 7UP. The flavor was a lot weaker than the aroma. I think age may have hurt the bottle I tried. I would have loved to try it fresh. It isn’t incredible, but truly unique. Hid alcohol very well, though. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a murky, medium brownish amber, orange with hardly any head. Just a few bubbles that were soon gone. The aroma was fruity, a little smokey, sort of minty too, plus so much else I can’t even describe. There was also some sour peaches and plums and a slight medicinal note. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, acidic and bitter; while the finish was moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, heavily bitter and sour with and average to long duration. The flavor was orange, grapefruit, peaches, tart and sort of bitter fruits, tea , plus much else. The light to medium body was flat with a moderate to heavy astringent finish.
