COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Lunacy is brewed exclusively with Belgian Pilsner malt, Styrian and English Goldings hops and freshly ground coriander. It begins its life with a long patient boil and is cast into the fermenter at 17.5 P. It then undergoes a vigorous fermentation and extended cold conditioning. After bottling, the beer receives an additional 2 week warm rest before it is released. This yields a surprisingly refreshing brew with spicy notes, sweet malt and subtle fruit.

Soft and subtle brew with a pleasant orange and spicey aroma. The esters are abundant and malt is clearly noticeable. This is a very good Belgium duplicate with tons of carbonation and flavor. The color is an orange and light brown combination (almost honey-like). It is slightly chewy as a load of yeast is still present, but it has agood alcohol base that is not too overbearing. I like this beer. This would go great with a spicey italian stromboli.

UPDATED: JUL 22, 2005 Could be the biggest bubblegum aroma I have come across yet. This stuff has a big punch and doesn’t try to hide it. Big white foamy head to boot. Good times indeed.

Sampled on the warm side, perhaps at 60°F (15°C). This beer is quite well carbonated; it starts to foam up as soon as I pop the cap. The beer is a brilliantly clear, rich gold color and is topped by a frothy pale tan colored head. The aroma has a sharp fruity character to it up front that is reminiscent of apples and pears with a bit of alcohol thrown into the mix. This is quickly followed by a solid funkiness that seems to be a signature Brett influence (I hadn’t thought that there was Brettanomyces used in this, perhaps it is just the yeast used, but I don’t think so); there are notes of musty metallic earth, and a hint of sharp mushroom character. The aroma is quite an interesting mix of funkiness and fruit, quite nice and I was not expecting the funky notes at all.

The taste is dry and spritzy with a solid fruitiness up front that reminds me of tart plums and pears. The beer finishes with a bit of that funky Brett like mustiness and a touch of sweetness that carries the fruit note through to the end. There is a certain floral / nectar taste here that is a combination of the fruit and a certain astringency that seems to be yeast derived (wild or otherwise). There is some nice sharp spiciness here as well; I detect notes of pepper, a bit of sharp ginger, and a dash of clove. This is quite the tasty, interesting beer, I was not expecting near this amount of complexity and funkiness (though the funkiness is not near the level found in a Lambic, just a level that is a nice

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2007 I have had this beer a couple of times over the years. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a rich golden color with a large fluffy white head. The aroma was sweet, vaguely sour, fruity and had a touch of spice. The flavor was sweet, fruity and had a light spiciness that grew on the finish. A nice golden ale.

12 oz bottle. Cloudy golden color with a small white head. Good lace even though the head dissipates fairly quickly. Extremely floral aroma along with quite a bit of fruit such as starfruit and grape. There is a sweet, alcohol flavor but it is balanced with some bitterness in the finish. The coriander is not that noticeable but that is fine. It does have a nice spicy flavor. It is very drinkable. Great beer.

Pours turbid dark straw with medium, fizzy, white head. Aroma of malt, hopcit, candi sugar. Tastes hoppy, citrusy, witty, with a slightly dry, citrus finish. Medium palate, with a smooth finish. As usual, a great beer from Heavyweight, and another great one from Tom Baker and his gang.

A very yeasty and somewhat sweetish concoction. A real soother after a pretty acidic beer beforehand. Abundant foam and creaminess. One of Heavyweight’s best, and one of few not being sourish. Citrus, bready, This would be a mainstay for me if on the local shelves.

UPDATED: AUG 10, 2005 The aroma is pretty spicy and I definately detect coriander-it gave me a flashback of Weyerbacher’s Prophecy. It smells like a cross between a belgian ale and a summer ale. I taste hints of vanilla and banana. It is very carbonated and has a dry finish/aftertaste. The aftertaste has a peppery feel. I enjoyed it in the first few sips and I enjoy all the punches it packs in the end. I think my bias here is that I love coriander and as the description notes, they pack it in.

June 2006 - Beer poured with a tripelesque color, next to no head, but a slew of small yeasties floating around.. Very faint aroma cold, but aroma consistant with flavor emerged as it warmed. Flavor was sweet, a lot of honey. A rich spiceyness with something that I can’t put my finger on (and didn’t see mentioned in other reviews) present, along with a definite yeastiness. A tad or tartness and even sourness as it warmed. A lot going on in this one. A nice effort!

Draught. Golden colored, hazy. Citrusy aroma, tart fruity. Fruity, tart, wheaty. Too much acidic bite.
