COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Lunacy is brewed exclusively with Belgian Pilsner malt, Styrian and English Goldings hops and freshly ground coriander. It begins its life with a long patient boil and is cast into the fermenter at 17.5 P. It then undergoes a vigorous fermentation and extended cold conditioning. After bottling, the beer receives an additional 2 week warm rest before it is released. This yields a surprisingly refreshing brew with spicy notes, sweet malt and subtle fruit.

Spicy nose with fresh hops - delightful. Cloudy orange color and a leggy head. Orange tastes with corriander, peppery and a sweet honey base. Complex but a pretty darn good balance.

Hazy yellow in appearance. Fruity (orange?) and slight hop aroma. Full mouthfeel. Alcohol very much in play. I may have opened this one too cold since it smoothed out nice as it began to warm.

Big green fruits with a hint of vanilla and spice in the nose, cloudy golden with tight bubbles in the head. Spice lingers throughout.

I like this one. Pale golden honey color - hazey. Beautiful white head, tightly carbonated (almost looks creamy), clings to glass. Nose of bright citrus fruit and sweet malt. Crisp and light palate. Smooth flavors of bittersweet fruit (grapefruit), with slightest touch of malt. Refreshing. Finishes with bitter hop notes - very smooth - just a bit of heat due to 7.7% ABV. Excellent beer with a comples taste that really shines after the beer has warmed up a bit in the glass.

This is a very good American-made belgian ale. Good carbonation, color and lacing. The aroma is of citrus and yeast. The flavor is sweet and slightly malty up front, and citrusy and tart in the middle, with a finish of caramel and melons. Another quality offering from heavyweight.

Poured a cloudy golden color with a small head that left some lacing. Wakie hit it on the head saying this is a hefeweizen meets IPA. Initial fruity orange taste followed by a mild hoppy taste.

Nice classic taste of a belgian ale. Very smooth taste with a fruit undertone.

Nice flavored beligian. Lots of hints of fruit, plums, bannanas, and finishes off with a nice malt aftertaste. Head was a little weak though.

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2006 NOTE: All bottles in my sampler case developed visible bacteria colonies shortly after purchase. Beers were replaced with brewery-fresh beer courtesy of Heavyweight. New rating: massive lees in the bottle. Pours hazy school bus yellow with lazy bubbles and a thin film of foam.Outrageous fruity nose sports intense grape, watermelon schnapps, Dr Pepper, yeast. The bubblegum aroma that is so prevalent in heavyweight beers is actually appropriate for once. A whirlwind of spicy and soft yeast flavors fill the mouth, with clove, nutmeg, apricot, and strawberry in supporting roles. Low carbonation. The medium body is thicker than excpected, and creamy. Aftertaste is so peppery and spicy that it playfully stings the tongue. Alcohol flavors are well integrated instead of blatant. Needs more bubbles; otherwise a fine brew. * * * Original rating follows; numbers 7, 3, 5, 2, 13, 3.0.*** Hazy apricot in the glass, with few bubbles. The small head, like a dusting of snow, is nonetheless long-lasting. Average lacing. Promising "Belgian" nose of yeast, candied lemon peel, horse urine/barnyard, musty and earthy scents, and gingerbread spice. The flavor is fruity and spicy- cantaloupe and mustard seeds(?)- and metallic. Lacks depth. Thin, dry palate with a yeasty aftertaste. Strong start, bland finish.

hard to believe that I’ve never reviewed this for as many times I’ve had it over the years. Appears a hazy deep gold with a fluffy, velvet foamy white that slowly fades out. Lovely scattered lacing left all around the glass. Smell is of citrusy candy, Belgian yeast, bubble gum, phenolic esters, spices highlighted by coriander. Slightly reminescent of Duvel perhaps with a more yeasty profile., which is a good thing by American standards. Taste is of the same aromas with a sugary yeasty blend. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly sweet up front, slick, and rousing along the palate. I’ll miss this one.
