COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

12-oz., ’04. Thanks, Kim! Thick rubied dark amber, brightly translucent. Slim ring of white foamy film. Laceless. Huge sweet cherry and red pitted tree fruit nose. Awesome suspended small bubbles hanging in the glass. This beer looks like time just stopped. Thick and sweet body right from the attack. Lovely rolling cherry, caramel, peach, bits of raisin and port on the mid-palate. Long toasty finish. Really quite lovely.

Many thanks to BA ClockworkOrange for contributing this to a tasting held at my place. 2005 offering via 750ml bottle. Pours a clear mahogany with dark ruby clarity through the body. Slim head of tiny bubbles holds around the outside of the glass. Aroma is sweet with notes of cherry, molasses, caramel, toffee, and just all around burnt sugars. A bit of fruity to floral hop/alcohol notes. Minor tinges of alcohol that transcends into the flavor. Rich with almost a mild salt addition. A touch of oxidation but overall quite a savory brew that is excessively drinkable with a full body and low level of carbonation. I am glad to finally be able to try this brew which I really enjoyed. However, I can’t help but wonder what this brew was like fresh some 7 years ago. Cheers and thanks Jason!

2004. Deep brown. So it is definitely old, oxidized malt, raisiny. There is a definite soy sauce autolyzed yeast character. I’d say this one is about done at this point in its life.

2004 bottle shared at the 6th annual Richmond Industry Gathering, 11/27/11. Pours a hazy copper color with nearly no head. Aroma of big toffee malts, stone fruits, cinnamon, spices and some oxidation notes, not surprisingly. Aroma of toffee, raisins, spices and bitter hops. Full bodied. Glad to finally try this.

Thanks to officerfriendly or the kind soul who shared this at IBrew2or3’s going away. Pours dark cola brown with an off-white head. Nose is caramel, cardboard, barleywine fruit, port, raisins, and some oxidation. Flavor is similar- past its prime, but has retained much of its former awesomeness. Flavor yields raisins, tart dark fruit, port, sherry, and lots of caramel mixed with oxidation. Medium-bodied, and still enjoyable.

Bottle shared at Paul and Ryan’s 5,000th rate tasting. 2004. Pours amber with a thin head. Sweet malty aroma with toffee and fruit. The flavor has sweet malts, some port-like notes, light fruity notes, toast, and toffee. Pretty good still.

Thanks to daknole. Bottle pours copper with a khaki head. Aroma shows port-like oxidation with notes of toffee, raisin, vanilla and a touch of earthy hops. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of brown sugar, fig, butterscotch, and a light hint of nuts. Glad to be able to try this one, pretty interesting after the age.

2002 bottle shared by hoppymeal at the 2010 Winter Solstice. Poured a clear deep amber brown with an off-white head that dissipated completely. Aroma was full of caramel with sweet grains, biscuit and seemed slightly oxidized. Flavor was similar with lots of sweet grains, caramel and a hint of toffee.
