o I am driving to DrMatt’s house to drop off a trade I just did with TheBeerCellar, in my back seat are: 2 Mueller’s Barrel Reserve, 1 Barrel Aged Wee Heavy, 1 Perkuno’s Hammer, 1 04’ Old Salty, and 1 Wake and Bake. I am driving and getting a little impatient because the lady in front of me is slamming on her breaks at every yellow light. Finally I get to my turn, with construction going on over the bridge to Matt’s house I have to take a right then make a U-Turn to go over the bridge. Anyway, I bust my U-turn, finally getting away from the old lady in front of me, and my styrofoam shipper in the back tips over and EXPLODES in a spray of delicious, malty beer. SHIT! Okay, so I have a 1/6 chance of being in the clear (Wake and Bake), a 2/6 chance of being slightly annoyed (Mueller’s can be replaced), a 2/6 chance of being really annoyed (Perkunos and Old Salty), and a 1/6 chance of driving my car off the bridge (BA Speedway). So, I immediately pull my car over, move my now soaked pea-coat, and discover a broken bottle of ’04 Old Salty. Shit! It smells so good, like caramel covered port, a touch of alcohol and subdued hops.
A very rich caramel color and some head is still floating on my leather seats. So, not wanting to waste any beer I wedge myself into the back and take a little taste (yeah, you would too, don’t lie). Tastes wonderful, aside from the random shards of glass and seat leather.
Definitely in need of a re-rate.
pantanap (793), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 11, 2008 12oz bottle from a trade awhile back. this is gonna be quick as this seems a little past its prime..... pours a dark amber brown with a bubbly like light brown head..... aroma of thick and chewy caramel malt, somewhat papery and aged..... flavors are sacharine and brown sugar-like. carbonation is very light. lots of sugar and no apparent hops. yet still drinkable if a little thin. dchmela (775), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 10, 2008 2005 bottle coutesy Eithcubes. Cloudy caramel colored pour with no head. Pours out like a glass of sherry. Huge malt, brown sugar, toffee, candy and dark fruit (yet no raisin) aroma. Very complex. Taste is sweet malt and sherry like with a slightly sour tang to it. Hops have long faded, which made way for some very nice complex malt. This has turned into a real sipper and wonderful. Swolf3 (90), Elkton, Maryland, USA Sep 23, 2008 Bottle thanks to guys at Stateline Liquors.. Poured copper in color with nice aroma of raisins dried fruit, and malts. Taste was similar to smell with a nice smooth salty finish. Enjoyed. henrikb (1129), Aarhus, Denmark Aug 26, 2008 2004 - Beautiful deep chestnut body with lots of sparkle, huge lasting fluffy beige head; Deep very interesting very sweet sugary caramel, a slight sharp medical touch fit the sweetness well; Huge bubbled big carbonation, soft but thin textured and quite slightly sweet; Becoming quite sharp bitter and a little salty in finish, some earthy hop aromas and a little burnt caramel as well. Great beer that really reminds of some of my favorite Harveys BW’s ! Start brewing again!! Naven (727), San Diego, California, USA Aug 22, 2008 Updated: Aug 23, 20082002 bottle from Kramer. Many thanks for this! At first pop of the cap, I could tell that this was going to be an interesting experience. At nearly 7 years old, I was more than curious. Very little carbonation on this one. Very interesting, fruity, almost vinous aroma. Flavor was all over the place: Fruit, Caramel, Brown Sugar, Red Wine, Salt, Vinegar, Pepper. I could go on and on. There is a strong asprin-like aftertaste that is very distracting. Definitely a lot going on here. I’m not sure if it completely works for me, but it is rather enjoyable and definitely unique.
