COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The sixth OTOP beer is code named PEGALINA. Many of you who know me or have tried Heavyweight beers know that I love malt and malty beers. But I also enjoy drinking hoppy beers. I love Hopdevil (who doesn't) and DeRanke XX. I've not made one up till now because there are just so many of them out there. Well, this one's for someone near and dear who loves hoppy brews. Pegalina is made with German malts and British hops. It is fermented with a very boring American ale yeast (just kidding, thanks Gretchen). The beer possesses 50 or so IBUs.

Draft at Blind Tiger. Great IPA. Well-balanced and fruity. Spicey aroma. Complex refreshing body and a nice average long hoppy finish. A good IPA.

07.10.04 tap @ HW open house. Orangey gold color. Seemed quite young to me, others at the tasting agreed. Nice malt backing makes it recognizably Heavyweight. Bready and sweet but with a harshly sharp, dry fresh hop bite. A welcome hoppiness, but too harsh it seemed for the type of hops used. Alas, the potential for this beer was evident and six weeks later it sounds like the beer has mellowed quite a bit.

Draft. Pours dark straw with medium head. Aroma of malt, fruit, hops. Tastes malty, with hops, slight fruit, and slight corn chips. Medium palate with a malt/hop/fruit/limey corn chip finish that was slightly dry. Unique.

Draft it the Grey Lodge in Philly. Ok Beer. Was a little to sweet (honey?) for me. Had a hop and it had a lot that I didn’t care for.

Not your typical American micro I.P.A. My nose was greeted by the scent of wet hops from this golden ale. Peglina’s German, British and American ingredients blend well together. This beer reminds me of a super hoppy Octoberfest beer.

On draft at the Grey Lodge. Modest hop bouquet, not much head, some lacing. Thought I was signing up for a hop monster, but instead this is a mild and mellow pale ale, nice hint of pepper in the finish.

Draught at Spuyten. Deer clear orange hue with a small off-white head. Interesting aroma with some nutty part I can’t put my finger on. Supposedly this is made with rye? It blended pretty well (hop rod rye anyone?) although very accessible. Hops are orangey and earthy which gives an english feel. Mouthfeel is smooth, rather mouth-filling and displaying lower than average effervescence. Nice malt bill (rye, cereals, caramel), Spicy peppery and orangey finish. I like it!

(draft) Clear mahogany body with beige head. Aroma is mild sweet, peppery, caramel, some earthy. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, port, earthy, pepper. Low carbonated, medium body, sticky. Not like any pale ale that I have ever had.

Draft at Monks... This was a very interesting, IPA? Whoa... Poured a dark reddish caramel color, medium sized off white head, and nice lacing. Aroma of yeast, light citrus, and tropical fruits. Interesting flavors going on in the taste. It tasted somewhat sweet, citrus (orange peel), some pepper, a little alcohol, and finally finishing a little roasty. Light carbonation. This tasted very Belgian to me, hops were not all that pronounced.

Amber appearance with an average head. Aroma had a cereal-like quality that reminded me of grapenut flakes. A maltier IPA with a butterscotch flavor. Finished smooth with little hint of the 7% abv. On tap at Max’s in Baltimore.
