tsarman (794), Northern, New Jersey, USA Nov 10, 2003 Updated: Jul 5, 2004 What a great beer. What a surprise. Saw this in a store and picked it up without checking out its rating. Boy was it good. Very mocha coffee-like. Dark color that is inpenetrable by a light bulb, even if it was inside of it. Nice full body. A joy of a brew.
AgentSteve (736), Livermore, California, USA Aug 14, 2008 Pours attractive deep caramel with nice tan head. The nose is sweet fruits, soy and a touch of cereal. The flavor goes way soy and sticky sweet. xmarcnolanx (636), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Aug 7, 2008 Aroma is sweet dark fruits, lots of coffee and dark malts.
Taste is slightly sour, dark malts, very low bitterness.
Finishes somewhat clean with coffee and maltiness.
Nice
hellbilly (837), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Jul 9, 2008 bottle graciously provided by beerbill... pours a hazy dark brown topped by a dense spongy tan head which sticks around for a while and leaves spotty lacing. aromas of chocolate, whole coffee beans, dark dried fruit, wood and something red wine-like... a bottle sitting without a cork for a day to oxidize and open up. the flavor is really rich and malty... chocolate/sweetened cocoa, light yeast, coffee and prunes without the sugar content. lightly tart dry finish with a huge aftertaste of whole coffee beans tucked in my lip. medium body seems a bit thin from the acidity and soft carbonation. i’m floored that this is still in good shape... it must have had a loving home for many years. even though it is past it’s prime and slightly oxidized, it is still better than (baltic thunder)... joshwilfong (509), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 16, 2008 black with tan head. unique flavor with a lack of the traditional chocolate malt predominance of a porter and more appearance of crystal and the lighter malts. a strong alcohol component and an overall very nice and unique porter JMFG (1086), Florida, USA Apr 9, 2008 Courtesy mcbackus, first brew of Merritt Island Throwdown. Dark brown color, dense thin tan head. Powdered cocoa aroma, slight licorice, a bit of alcohol. Slight heat on the taste, sweet roastiness, a bit too much alcoholic apparent in the taste for 8%. Chalky texture.
