3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, USA - MAY 29, 2005
Midnight purple. Thin but persistent and rocky gray-tan foam of putty consistency. Floral hops and molasses-covered green raisin scents entwined with unripe peaches and dried pineapples. Hints of sulfur, malt dust, and musty yeast. Spongy carbonation with a soft density. Immediate iron-accented tartness coincides with a strong pull of raspy yeast. Retains its succulence in spite of this, with a wave of melon and rounded baked-apple acidity. Understatedly malty with a faintly-toasted buttered biscuit note and a husky malt anchor. Pleasant yeast character, although it’s much more herbal and chalky than sassily spicy. Chocolate stops just shy of blossoming, as the tartness and husky malt neutralize the sweetness. Finishes simultaneously soft and astringent with green raisins, passion fruit, grassy herbs, and crushed minerals. Muted trail of anise, roast, and chalky yeast. Not as dry, chocolaty, fervently spicy, or briskly dry as I’d hoped it to be, but the texture is soft and velvety, and the aroma is very nice. A quintessential picnic beer.

750 ml shared by a Columbus Crew member. Thanks! Pours a murky blackish hue, some lighter edges. A big frothy tannish head laces well. Aromas are lemons, lactic acid, roasty malts, some cocoa, and biscuits. Initial is lighter bodied, a substantial lemony lactic bite, with good firm roast beneath, sour fruits, roast and toast, some cocoa, biscuits, toffee. Remains light and spritzy, with a good healthy sour kick up front. Some cocoa, toffee, potential sweetness into the backend, light and dry. Pretty nice, a good contrast. Maybe a bit sharp and harsh but it worked for me and I really enjoyed it. A priviledge to try.. Who knows if every again? Very nice.

Bottle shared at Paul’s Thanksgiving tasting. Pours dark brown with an off white head. Saison spicy aroma with some light roasty malts. The flavor has spicy saison yeasty notes, a light sweetness, light roast, and a sour hint. Great given its age.

Bottle at Paul’s tasting. Pours a ruby tinged cola black. Sweet oxidized old fruit, toast and roast on the nose. Sweet and tangy, more oxidization on old malt, roast. Interesting, and nearly sour in places with some odd tanginess.

Can’t remember who sent this, but huge thanks! Pours nearly black with medium sized tan head. Aroma is chocolate, roast, vineous, tart cherry. Flavor is fantastic, chocolate, cola, tart cherries, vineous, dark fruits, plums skins. Palate is medium bodied, medium to high carbonation, finished roasty with some silky tartness, very easy drinking. This was a great brew. As good if not better than both Black Ghost and SPF 8. Wish I could find more of this!

This is one of the HW’s that was still good I think. Nice and sour fruits. Citrus fruits and dark fruit with some sweetness. Really good still.

Bottle: Dark brown and not clear. Tangy aroma akin to the air around a BBQ on a cool night. It has similar flavors especially the tang to a Flemish sour ale. If all saisons tasted like this, I would drink more of them.

Bottle: Dark mahoghany pour with a thin brown head. Aroma is chocolatey with some roastiness and dark fruits. Some sour and tart notes as well. The taste puts more tart into the equation; dark fruits, light roast, and some more cocoa. Has a soft earthy quality to it, but retains a light tart feel. Different for sure, but certainly good. Thanks biggcb.
