Sammy (3242), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 17, 2007 An outstanding beer that likely got better with cellaring. Bourbon winey aroma and in initial flavour, Bottle #54. Brown with mocha head and lots of lace. Wild yeast, warming alcohol. Chocolate milt, citrus, stouty, cocoa stouty, Smooth with the flemish sourness mid-sip. Complex and one of a kind. jjpm74 (3447), Connecticut, USA Jul 6, 2005 Updated: Jul 13, 2005I’m glad this one is capped and not corked as it starts out initially as a slight eruption that would have likely blown off a cork on loosening of the cage. Initially pours out extremely lively with a huge off-white/tanish head that consumes the entire glass at first. Once that subsides, the beer is a brownish red in color and opaque. No noticeable floaties or cloudiness present. Smells of straw, sugar, yogurt, cookie dough, cognac, bananas, and slightly flowery. Taste is very nutty with cherries and some great grapey elements and a hoppy and tangy finish. Has a bit of a lambic quality with some nice tarte and farmyard notes. This is a very complex beer, especially for one that only clocks in at 6.2% ABV! beastiefan2k (1182), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA Dec 12, 2006 I did have this at the Captain Lawrence gathering on Saturday but I busted out a bottle today as well. Just to ruin the surprise for anyone reading, this is freaking awesome right now. Must have got a good cap on this (WillBlake had me scared), cause when I popped this a big rush of noise came out. Poured with a huge tan head that just wouldnt dissipate. Been in this glass for almost 30 minutes and the complete surface is still covered with a tan foam. An almost black but just very dark brown body. Aroma is milky, with Belgian candi sweetness, and an unspecified airy, freshness, I am thinking like a smell of an ocean breeze (without the salt). Just effervescent. Taste starts sweet and ends with a sour ting. The palate is amazing though, barely feel a beer, it just dissipates in your mouth. Just feel a rush of bubbles disappear into nothingness almost as soon as it touches my cheeks. Leaving a light sweet and soury aftertaste. Now, I know the beer I tried on Saturday was nowhere near this good, so who the hell knows what going on but this is just freaking amazing. Cornboy (411), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA May 8, 2005 Updated: Jun 5, 2005Rerate, bottled. Outstanding. Hinds of sourness coming through now with an interesting light tart fruit midway. Finish has the smallest hint of chocolate. All the saisons should be jealous of this brew!
On tap at Heavyweight.
Poured dark brown with a small head. Hints of yeast funkiness, some chocolate, and dried fruit, lots going on in this one. Midway through the sweetness of the malt kicks in, and finishes smooth. Another winner from Heavyweight. Tom & Peggy show that they can brew incredible beers at any ABV! By the way, it was officially listed at the event at 6.1325% in case you were keeping track :) shintriad (698), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 11, 2008 Four-year-old bottle, thanks Sammy. Insane head on this. Dark caramel brown and cloudy, sourish barnyard smells mingle with mocha. Puckering lime, salts, champagne yeast in flavour -- weird combo of sour Flemish with a cheesecake-sweet barley wine. Truly unusual, definitely great.
