3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, USA - JUL 23, 2006
Burnt orange. Mountainous pile of foam deposits puffy, adhesive lace as it falls. Honeydew, lavender, and perfumey phenols comprise the rustic nose. Hint of popcorn develops as it warms. Pointy carbonation loosens the moment it hits the tongue. Extremely airy. Toasted-cracker malt flavors inundate the palate as a sharp, yet delicately “wild,” tartness gracefully trails. Mild yeasty astringency exudes, but not overwhelmingly so. Savory haylike malt develops toward the later half, but along with it comes an overstated and unrefined huskiness. Feisty carbonation and a sharp brett-induced dryness unfortunately offset the juicy Styrian kiss, though cool whispers of lavender continue to uplift and refresh. Finishes appetizingly dry and slightly musty, although the husky popcorn-tinged malts interfere with the delightfully nuanced brett derivatives. Overall, the phenols are poorly controlled and the carbonation is harsh and prickly. In terms of flavor, the overly expressive malts eclipse the wonderful array of subtleties that lie beneath. I can only imagine what a liberal dose of Pilsner malt would have done for this. A commendable effort, but this doesn’t hold a candle to their heavenly Golden Idol.

Courtesy of Pailhead. Hazy amberish, nice off-white head, full of tiny carb bubbles. Pineapple and dark/black cherries up front, not much for malt. Flavor, nice pils malt up front, bread/toast, slight sourness comes through as it warms, takes over in the finish. Well done. Easy drink.

Bottle: Poured an amber orange with a white head. The aroma was funk, citrus, and flowers. The flavor was orange, pear, brett, some faint hops, and just a touch of sour. This beer, being 4 years old is still quite delicious.
