beaconstreet (810), Washington DC, USA Sep 26, 2004 Liking this beer a lot, as I seem to like gruit quite a lot. Really, this style should be making a comeback. Larger breweries, even larger microbreweries, do you hear me?! Lemon and kind of herbal tasting, actually. Slightly hazy. Tastes bubbly but doesn’t look it. What herbs are in this one? The mouthfeel of the beer seems heavier than the color, a sharp contrast.
tytoanderso (1256), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Dec 17, 2008 12oz bottle. Interesting nose - spicy and sour. Cinnamon, ginger, lemongrass, rosemary. Tart cherries. Sour lemondrop candies. Unique. Pours a still, dark copper. Nearly lifeless, but attractive nonetheless. Acidic vinegar and mild spice flavor profile. Quite earthy with hints of wet wood and leaf pile as well. Flat body, but works fairly well with the flavor components of the beer. Finishes tart, vinegary and rather sour. Weird. Thanks John! chimplechamp (396), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 12, 2008 bottle- from amazing store in edison nj. vintage 2005-2006? maybe,, pours cloudy amber reddish, with heinous amounts of sediment. looks like nj raw sewage. nose is gloriously vinous, with hints of sour red cherry, taste is the same with great hop character to balance the sourness. awesome. wetherel (1217), Encinitas, California, USA Jul 21, 2008 Bottle shared at Stone Sour Fest. 2-3yr old 12oz bottle. Brewery out of business in 2005. Cloudy amber color. Nice mild flowery aroma. No oxidation off aromas. Low carbonation. Low flavor. Decent. JCB (1191), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jul 18, 2008 12oz from Chevy Chase Wine, D.C. Gotta love Heavyweight and their old school experimentalism. A cloud pour with an indistinct color, as if it could be all beers, anything from a flagon back in ancient times. Still body, tart and spicy aroma. The rosemary was faintly detectable and a nice herbal emphasis certainly made for an interesting brew. Fairly still and lacking presence in the body, and in some ways the spices tended to overpower things. But glad to have tried it. iowaherkeye (1441), relocated to Santa Rosa f/Iowa, California, USA Apr 24, 2008 12oz bottled bonus from BrianK--no date. Marked on the bottle 372 in gold ink. Cloudy orange brown with a one finger dirty white head. Earth, vinegar, and sour cherries are dominant in the aroma with some caramel behind. There is also some wintergreen and misc. herbs--I’m hard-pressed to pick them out. Flavor is again plenty tart (lemon, tart apples, and cherries) with spices and herbal notes again (wintergreen still present)--still some caramel sweetness, but still lopsided by the tang. Earthy semi-dry finish with bitterness peaking at a2-3. Moderate carbonation with a light to medium body. Pretty decent, actually, and interesting, to say the least. Wonder what this was like when it was fresh.
