Commercial Description:
Honorary brothers Tom Baker and Tony Forder, created their special Gruit to flavor this medieval ale. In the 14th century, before the advent of hop usage, ales were infused with sacred and secret herbs. Yarrow, Sweet GAle and Wild Rosemary were used to create this earthy, complex and intriguing ale.

’03-12oz bottle-pours a thin fizzy white head that vanishes. Hazy/cloudy that you can’t see thru, deep orange, with sediment floating throughout. Aroma is fruity/apple, berry, herb. Musty. Taste is initially a burst of everything that the nose picked up. Then some additional notes add in from plum, cherry, honey, malt, wheat and tartness. Not a session beer, but quite interesting, nice. 4.2

Bottle shared at Stone Sour Fest. 2-3yr old 12oz bottle. Brewery out of business in 2005. Cloudy amber color. Nice mild flowery aroma. No oxidation off aromas. Low carbonation. Low flavor. Decent.

12oz from Chevy Chase Wine, D.C. Gotta love Heavyweight and their old school experimentalism. A cloud pour with an indistinct color, as if it could be all beers, anything from a flagon back in ancient times. Still body, tart and spicy aroma. The rosemary was faintly detectable and a nice herbal emphasis certainly made for an interesting brew. Fairly still and lacking presence in the body, and in some ways the spices tended to overpower things. But glad to have tried it.

12oz bottled bonus from BrianK--no date. Marked on the bottle 372 in gold ink. Cloudy orange brown with a one finger dirty white head. Earth, vinegar, and sour cherries are dominant in the aroma with some caramel behind. There is also some wintergreen and misc. herbs--I’m hard-pressed to pick them out. Flavor is again plenty tart (lemon, tart apples, and cherries) with spices and herbal notes again (wintergreen still present)--still some caramel sweetness, but still lopsided by the tang. Earthy semi-dry finish with bitterness peaking at a2-3. Moderate carbonation with a light to medium body. Pretty decent, actually, and interesting, to say the least. Wonder what this was like when it was fresh.

This beer poured a cloudy reddish brown with no head. It smelled like cherry coke, and tasted like flat cherry coke mixed with water. I am not very familiar with the gruit style, but if I hadn’t been told, I would not guess this was a beer. I would not serve this beer with food.

Bottled. Poured medium coppery-amber with a short-lived fizzy cap of tan head. The aroma picked up the strangest blend of floral, herbal, and sour notes I’ve ever encountered.. hibiscus, dried rosemary, fruit skins, and honey come to mind.. bonus point for the different factor! The flavor was along those same lines.. sour lighter fruits at the core with dried petals, rosemary, and other herbs surrounding.. again I think there was some honey holding it together.. long sour, spicy finish. Medium-bodied with fuller carbonation on the palate.. a hair too sour for my liking.. intriguing blend of components. I wonder what this was like fresh..
