beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 5, 2007 Pours a cloudy red color with a thin offwhite head. Aroma of fruity hops and caramel. Solid flavor of citrusy hops with caramel and a bitter finish. The body is light to medium with an oily texture and soft carbonation. jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 30, 2007 Mahogany with excellent creamy head / Sweet nose of raisins and wine / Full body with strong hop finish / Thick, slightly cloying, flavors of raisins, caramel and black pepper / Alcohol bite noticable and a bit ungainly. Tejas (693), Dallas, Texas, USA Jul 28, 2007 Hmmm, I didn’t get the same effect others did. Couldn’t really pick up much rye flavor or much hoppiness. Sure, got a lot of alcohol flavor though. This ones too hot; masks other good flavors. Great head on this one though which will skew my rating higher. darn1207 (529), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jul 26, 2007 Updated: Mar 20, 200922oz bottle. Aroma earthy, piney, with some caramel. Palate was lacking thickness for a double IPA. Reminded more of a Strong Ale. k7 wxman (582), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Jul 24, 2007 Updated: May 29, 2009Pours a ruby amber color with a pretty decent yellow/tan head that is retained. Sweet malt aroma with some sharp spice characteristics. Taste is thick and rich. Sweet buttery caramel malt along with a pleasant but assertive bitter coffee presence. Some hoppiness in the aftertaste as well as alcohol warmth. I like this. It’s a little busy, but quite good. obxdude10 (1546), Pottstown, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 21, 2007 I’m obviously in the dissenting opinion of this beer, but it was definitely lacking any & all characteristics of a double IPA, too heavy on the malts, too dark of a color, overly malty nose with too much caramel & sugar, not enough hops throughout, including the aroma, flavors & finish, too much alcohol in the flavors & aftertaste, a very disappointing & subpar offering
boFNjackson (1233), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 17, 2007 PIB... Bottle poured a ruby color with a thin white head. Barley-like caramel on the nose. Thick, syrupy, yet soft palate. Flavors of rye (naturally) influenced hops that lead way to a complex, cough medicine like concoction of floral malt and barley. Extremely unique. anders37 (4516), Malmö, Sweden Jul 13, 2007 Bottle @ Akkurat, Stockholm. Pours a clear copper coloer with a small off-white head. Sweet malty vinous alcoholic aroma with some hints of hops. Sweet malty hoppy bitter flavor with some hints of grapefruit. Dry malty bitter finish with some alcoholic hints.
