3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Chad9976 (883) - Albany, New York, USA - MAY 5, 2012"Bittersweet" has always seemed like a contradictory word to me. How can something be bitter and sweet at the same time? Well, take a swig of He’Brew Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A. and you’ll know. This is a beer that walks a fine line between imperial IPA and a flat-out barleywine.
I poured a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass.
Appearance: Beautiful burgundy shade; hazy but translucent. Forms an average-sized, canary yellow, frothy head which leaves extraordinary amount of lacing on the glass.
Smell: Extremely sweet tropical/citrus fruit juice concentrate. A nose that indicates massive sweetness and bitterness.
Taste: Strong bitterness up front which immediately transitions to rich syrupy sweetness. It’s one of the sweetest beers of the style I’ve had, but also one of the few examples whose sweetness is kept in check. There’s no cloying or sticky aftertaste here. The bitterness comes back on the finish with a bit of a dry spice flavor due to the rye. The rye is rather subtle, although I’ve had old bottles where it tasted like sour rye extract. There’s also a pleasant, but subtle, presence of dark fruit through the middle. Cherry, plum, and raisin are all detectable plus a hint of dark chocolate. It’s a good balance of sweetness and raw bitterness, although the palate as a whole is nothing mind-blowing, just really impressive.
Drinkability: For such a big beer, He’Brew Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A. is surprisingly tame across the tongue. The mouthfeel is thick and full bodied, but only lightly carbonated. The texture is smooth and the aftertaste is only slightly dry, which is remarkable considering how much bitterness and sweetness is present while it’s in the mouth. For a beer weighing in at a hefty 10% ABV, there is no alcohol presence at all. No heat, no warmth, and it doesn’t go to your head or fill you up right away.

Mix six from Total Wine. Darker golden pour with a white foamy head. Light floral and citrus smell (really light). Bitter with a distinct finish. Really no hops at all in the finish. I thought this was okay but it is strong.

Ultra smooth with a nice hoppy finish. Not for the faint of heart but an amazing beer.

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2013 12oz bottle pours a dark ruby red copper color with a thick fluffy off white head that leaves great lacing. Smells of rye, pine, and resin and grapefruit. Tastes of all the same things in the smell and is definitely boozy enough to taste the high abv. Mouthfeel is slightly oily and creamy with good carbonation. Overall this is a really tasty ipa. I like the way the rye goes well with the hops. The only downfall is the boozyness.

From bottle into snifter, clear deep ruby with lasting thick head. Smell is subdued, taste is quite nice up front but then it turns into a monster and does a piss poor job of hiding the 10% ABV...but that’s bittersweet. As long as you keep chugging and avoiding the ABV bite, it’s good. As soon as you stop...beware the demon. If you’re looking to get fucked up quick, load up. If you’re looking for something to savor, look elsewhere. Time to chug.

Bottle. Kinda misheard the bartender when I ordered this one, but why not. Not what I would expect at all in the nose for a RIPA. Hops are not where they should be at all. Too much rye with no focus on the hops.

Bottle. Pours a medium brown with a smallish cream colored head that leaves a thick lacing in the glass. Aroma of dark sugars and alcohol. Flavor is bittersweet across a thick mouthfeel. Very complex malt bill. Little in the way of aroma hops but plenty of bitterness. Finishes dry and tannic in the mouth. Not bad, but now my favorite IIPA - not nearly enough aroma hops for my taste.

Crystal clear dark orange/amber with good head and decent lacing. Aroma rye, alcohol and soapy hops. Flavor is big soapy bitter and somewhat grainy with rye spiciness apparent. Alcohol comes through strong in flavor and adds more spiciness, which throws it into overload for me. Mouthfeel is oily with medium body with high carbonation. Too much alcohol and soapy bitterness for my taste.
