Death seems so obvious: the end of life, no mas, kaput. But Humans stand an optimistic animal. Many traditions suggest alternate endings: Resurrection, reincarnation, rebirth, afterlife. Even the atheist view of Eternal Oblivion doesn’t seem quite final, more of a shift in spiritual states of (un)consciousness. As usual, Jewish tradition prescribes… Food. 7 days of family, community, and bagels (beer!), called, Shiva, meaning “7” in Hebrew. The flip side to the 7 days of Creation with the 7th as a holy day of rest. The first meal of Shiva is “the comfort meal.” And the number 7 provides powerful mojo: 7 Jewish wedding blessings, 7 Liberal Arts, 7 Lucky Japanese gods, 7 stars of the Big Dipper, 7 colors of the rainbow, 7 seas, 007 license to kill, 7 dwarves, We are 7 by Wordsworth with a child’s view of death, 7 deadly sins, Best of 7 finals in NBA, NHL, MLB, 7th Inning stretch, #7 on Elway & Tiny Archibald. George Castanza yearned to name his firstborn, “7” as a living tribute to #7 Mickey Mantle. The 7 Award however must go to the immortal George Carlin for 7 Dirty Words, inspired by another hero Lenny Bruce. Coming into 17 years of beer, and Year #1 with our own Brewery, we commemorate this conversion with Death Of A Contract Brewer, our Shmaltz homage to new life – L’Chaim! Jeremy Cowan, proprietor

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On draft at Yard House. Pours a dense black. Aroma is hops and malt. Taste comes in the opposite order -- malt comes first with a long, strong hoppy finish. Comparable to the Wookie Jack, though not quite as good.

Part of the Hanukkah pack. Not bad, I’m not always a fan of black IPAs as they often seem to not come together well but this did OK. Serving: Bottle

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber. Ruby hued clear deep dark brown, darker tan foam settles and mostly lasts. Pungent aroma of dark roasted malt, citrusy coniferous hop, earthy caramel. Taste is bold dark roasty c-malt, piney, citrusy and woody, hints of chocolate and coffee. Average carbonation, medium-full bodied, well hopped. DNFL (Definitely Not For Lagerboys)

Great molasses & toffee aroma. Flavour nicely complex and takes you on a journey of those same flavours. But all the while maintaining a refreshing, lime like quality throughout.

2oz bomber from Jonathan Ron Rio Grande. Pourer a deep pitch black body under a smaller foamy light beige head. Aroma is really good, notes of lightly roasted pineapple, some campfire wood, burnt toast and dark malts, hint of bunt fruit and some wood and earth. Body is full, stronger carbonation and a lingering aftertaste. Flavor is like the aroma but a slight touch lighter, dark toast, dark roasted chocolates, burnt fruit, burnt paper. Overall good stuff.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours black w/ a big tan head that leaves lacing. The aroma is softer than expected w/ a mild blend of hops & roasted malt. The taste is fairly light on the palate. It’s light & creamy upfront & then finishes hoppy & bitter. It has decent depth in flavor & is all around a solid beer!
