Death seems so obvious: the end of life, no mas, kaput. But Humans stand an optimistic animal. Many traditions suggest alternate endings: Resurrection, reincarnation, rebirth, afterlife. Even the atheist view of Eternal Oblivion doesn’t seem quite final, more of a shift in spiritual states of (un)consciousness. As usual, Jewish tradition prescribes… Food. 7 days of family, community, and bagels (beer!), called, Shiva, meaning “7” in Hebrew. The flip side to the 7 days of Creation with the 7th as a holy day of rest. The first meal of Shiva is “the comfort meal.” And the number 7 provides powerful mojo: 7 Jewish wedding blessings, 7 Liberal Arts, 7 Lucky Japanese gods, 7 stars of the Big Dipper, 7 colors of the rainbow, 7 seas, 007 license to kill, 7 dwarves, We are 7 by Wordsworth with a child’s view of death, 7 deadly sins, Best of 7 finals in NBA, NHL, MLB, 7th Inning stretch, #7 on Elway & Tiny Archibald. George Castanza yearned to name his firstborn, “7” as a living tribute to #7 Mickey Mantle. The 7 Award however must go to the immortal George Carlin for 7 Dirty Words, inspired by another hero Lenny Bruce. Coming into 17 years of beer, and Year #1 with our own Brewery, we commemorate this conversion with Death Of A Contract Brewer, our Shmaltz homage to new life – L’Chaim! Jeremy Cowan, proprietor

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - 22 oz bomber. Deep dark brown pour with a sticky dark khaki colored head that leaves a nice film of lacing. Aroma is fragrant with some light spruce accents, some brandy, a touch of chocolate. Flavor is bold, with some licorice, chocolate, citrus bitterness, some brown sugar and cola in the finish. Nice thick mouthfeel. Pretty solid.

This is awesome. I’m a big fan. Cloudy brown pour with good head and lacing. Lots of roast and citrus malt. Mocha cream head. Bitter finish. Sweetness and bitterness comes together. Some caramelized malt and chocolate as well. Tap at DC Beer festival.

Aroma is mostly from the bitterness. Some clove, grassiness and earthiness here. Taste is quite bitter with a tastes match get the aroma. Some slight roastiness picked up. Appearance is a dark black body with a thin pearl head that retains fairly well.

Someone shouldn’t whistle in the elevator. This is an itneresting black IPA with a pure black body and a supremely foamy head. The nose is roasted and coffee accented with a ligth fruity hop backbone. well balanced and nicely done overall with a lingering hop bitterness. A bit boring though...

2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
22 oz bottle. Pours brown with a big creamy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass a little.
The aroma is sweet cola, grains, chocolate malt and a little piney hops. Smelled a bit odd.
The flavor is sweet grains, dark fruit, leather, a little roast. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and a bit watery.
Overall, a sweet odd black IPA.

On tap at the hollywood gardens. Big & black. Citrusy smell laced with pepsin. Nice lacing. Bitter hoppy rude first impressions. Leaves a big long burnt roasted IPA finish. A little off and I’m not impressed by this style.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber from Sonoma Cellars in Oconomowoc. Pours cola colored with a tan head leaving nice streaks of lace. Aroma has citrus and pine, and black patent malts with chocolate. Initially there was an herbal component, but it let down thru the glass, which was an improvement. Taste is of black malts, some citrus and other fruitiness. Faint chocolate and light grape. Medium to full bodied. Smooth and finishes nicely balanced between bitter and sweet. A solid black ipa!

Looks like a stout, yard like as cross between a black ipa and a stout. A little bitter finish
