Pours a dark brown with a small mocha colored head and minimal lacing. Funky is definitely the perfect adjective to describe this one. The aroma is sour apple/cherry from the brettanomyces and oak from the barrels. Taste is very tart and sour with subtle hints of sherry and bourbon. I hadn’t looked at any reviews prior to tasting this and was surprised at just how strong the sourness is. Medium bodied with low carbonation. Interesting.

Pours dark brown with a medium sized tan head and good lacing. Aroma is sour up front then bourbon, vanilla and chocolate. Flavors are roasted malts, whiskey, wood, vanilla, chocolate and molasses
Very nice and tasty. I sipped on this all night, I didn’t want it to end.

complex, awful, disgusting you decide? Great great nose of sour lemon and cherry with nice sour barrel aroma. A big very dark sour. Tastes a little wild. I like it.

650ml bottle into a Samuel Adams glass; served cool.
Aroma: Moderately sour. Mild chocolate. Definitely funky.
Appearance: Opaque dark brown body with a creamy tan head. Not great lacing.
Taste: Pretty sour stuff. Tart and sour. That’s all I’m getting. It’s good, just super super sour.
Palate: Medium-full body, low carbonation. Long, sour finish.
Overall: Pretty nice. I wasn’t expecting it to be this sour, but it was a nice surprise. Good stuff.

12 oz bottle with a 22 oz label. Dark brown with a few flecks of froth. Nose is full on bretty funk verging on red wine vinegar. Juicy medium body with a tang. Taste is pomegranate, molasses, sherry, bourbon, grapes and wood. The sourness knits it all together but still too much to jive.

22 ounce bottle, bottled on 2/18/2013. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown with some reddish tints, and about a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. The brew smells like tart dark fruit (cherries), vinegar, whiskey, wood, lemon peel and some blackberries. Taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some raisins, caramel, vanilla and a bit of chocolate. I think the tart fruitiness is dominant, but the whiskey flavor is noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit slick and has low/moderate carbonation. I thought this was a good brew, I wasn’t expecting the tartness so it was a nice surprise. Definitely worth a try. $10.99 a bottle.

22 oz bottle from Binny’s Beverage Depot in Chicago, served in a stem glass. Pours deep chestnut with a small tan head that fades to a thin cover and leaves a trace of lace. On the nose, it is moderately sour with fruity notes, oak, molasses and caramel, along with Brettanomyces, vanilla, raisins and whiskey. The flavour is moderately sour, with funky Brettanomyces notes and sour fruits combined with oak, caramel, vanilla and whiskey barrel. It closes out with long, lingering notes of tart fruit, complex malts and whiskey barrel. On the palate it is medium-full in body with a smooth, milky texture and average carbonation. Overall, a nice funky variant of a great barrel-aged blend. 2013-11-22

Draft served in a snifter at Heavy Riff. Pours a deep brown with amber edges and a small beige head. Abundant berry fruit in this one, along with plums, chocolate, figs, raisins, vanilla, caramel, oak, bourbon, and a bit of rye spice. Medium-full bodied, with a tart, funky, sweet mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. A little bit of umami character on the palate, too. Yet another complex, interesting, satisfying barrel aged beer from these guys.

draft at Blue Monk. brownish ruby pour. lots of dark fruits, sour cherry, balsamic, tart berry notes. red wine like flavors, plus some fruity sweetness, jammy red wine and some tart/sourness. kind of boozy, slightly incohesive, still decent

Bottle: The aroma consists of cherries (sweet and lightly tart), light lemon,apple, cola, caramel, vanilla, fruit, and faint whiskey. It pours a dark brown with an orange glow around the edges of the glass. It has a one finger beige head that fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is minimal lacing. The flavor starts with quick dose of light chocolate and fruit. The finish has moderate-heavy sweet and tart cherry, a touch of lemon, apple, faint vanilla, a touch of whiskey/bourbon, and oak. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, I’m not sure this was intentional, but it comes across as a decent dark sour.
