Draft served in a snifter at Heavy Riff. Pours a deep brown with amber edges and a small beige head. Abundant berry fruit in this one, along with plums, chocolate, figs, raisins, vanilla, caramel, oak, bourbon, and a bit of rye spice. Medium-full bodied, with a tart, funky, sweet mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. A little bit of umami character on the palate, too. Yet another complex, interesting, satisfying barrel aged beer from these guys.

Pretty funky i guess, pours a deep brown.. Lacing is bully! ..balanced malts and tartness .. . Mouth is quite full .. . Pretty interesting brew .. . . Whenever I tell the cashier to ‘keep the change’, it takes everything in my power not to call them a filthy animal.

Bottle. Treat after my first dose of radiation. Deep, dark, almost black but red, like super dark cherry juice. It also has a bit of a dark cherry nose, and at first sip I get some of it too. Quite fizzy. Tart to its core, this has quite a bit going on ... with hints of an almost gin-like sting. Funky, indeed! (#5425, 2/5/2014)

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Dark brown pour with a tan head. The aroma is full of chocolate, roasted malt, oak, maple and some dark fruit. The flavor is equally complex. I get quite a bit of tart dark fruit (mainly cherries and grapes) as well as some roasted malt and chocolate. The oak also comes through in the flavor. Thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very nice.

draft at Blue Monk. brownish ruby pour. lots of dark fruits, sour cherry, balsamic, tart berry notes. red wine like flavors, plus some fruity sweetness, jammy red wine and some tart/sourness. kind of boozy, slightly incohesive, still decent

Bottle. Batch No. 2/Cases 1492. Bottling date 2/18/2013. Opaque murky, mahogany pour with a tall, dense brown head. Aroma is sweet and loaded with caramel but with an underlying spicy rye note and sour fruit. Taste combines tart fruit, spicy ye, chewy caramel, vanilla, light molasses, brown sugar and soft woody notes and blurs them with the sour fruitiness coming out on the back end while the sweetness and woody notes are up front. The boozy notes from the barrel aging treatment are mellow but constant throughout. Body is medium and slightly chewy up front but rapidly changes to dry and tart during the finish. The carbonation is soft and there is stickiness galore as well as mild warmth. Ends with more sour fruit notes, funky yeast, chewy caramel, brown sugar, light vanilla, booze and soft wood notes. Nice!

Bottle: The aroma consists of cherries (sweet and lightly tart), light lemon,apple, cola, caramel, vanilla, fruit, and faint whiskey. It pours a dark brown with an orange glow around the edges of the glass. It has a one finger beige head that fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is minimal lacing. The flavor starts with quick dose of light chocolate and fruit. The finish has moderate-heavy sweet and tart cherry, a touch of lemon, apple, faint vanilla, a touch of whiskey/bourbon, and oak. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, I’m not sure this was intentional, but it comes across as a decent dark sour.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body with a tall, surging, medium tan head. While it does quickly settle, it doesn’t quite evaporate on you.
Smell: Sweetish, malty with varied, churning notes of roasted barley, caramel, baker’s chocolate, toasted bread crusts, and nuts all cut by a jutting tartish fruitiness that, when co-mingled with the sweetish tones, has a quality like a good quality balsamic vinegar. I’m on-board with this one.
Taste: Roast, caramel, and some noted nuttiness with a fair degree of sweetness, but, there’s a very quick jolt (just like in the nose, BANG, it’s there) of tart fruitiness akin to a gulp of sangria. Interspersed with an agreeable bourbon barrel quality. A little earthiness underneath it all, with a low tone of black pepper. A little late-arriving vanilla and rye. Takes on the vinegary quality on the back half and into the semi-sweet, smooth, agreeably warming finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-plus carbonation.
Overall: A pleasing beer and another quality release from the good folks at Shmaltz.

Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Sweet bourbon, vanilla, pomegranate and rye aromas. Thick with hot caramel and pit fruit upfront turning to a warming chocolate and pomegranate finish.
