15 Years and the bombastic beers blossom bolder than ever. The shtick ages so beautifully as well – some favorites from the Shmaltz vault: FIGS: “And their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked; they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.” -Genesis 3:7. POMEGRANATES: In Medieval images of a unicorn hunt, the captured beast bleeds from wounds of pomegranate seeds dripping blood red juices on his milk white body. Wild and uncontrollable by nature, unicorns could be tamed only by virgins. Once tamed, the unicorn was chained to a pomegranate tree. DATES: Song of Solomon 7:6: “How beautiful and delightful you are, my Love, with all your charms! Your stature is like a date palm tree, and your breasts like its clusters. I will climb the tree and take hold of its fruit stalks.” Psalm 92:12: “The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm.” Arab proverb: It is good to know the truth, but it is better to speak of palm trees. GRAPES: “Oh, when I was a kid in show business I was poor. I used to go to orgies to eat the grapes.” -Rodney Dangerfield. Genesis Chapter 15 promises many battles but also sacred covenants. Verse 15: “You, Abraham shall be gathered into the arms of your people and pass at a ripe old age.” To the torrents and the trials, the punchlines and the pleasures. 22 oz. bottle, split 4 ways, pours a dark brown with a reddish hue and a small, quickly-dissipating tan head. Aroma of pomegranate, dates, figs, grapes, treacle toffee, and subtle rye notes, though not heavily pronounced on the nose. Flavour is extremely rich and complex, with the above-mentioned dried fruits, brandy / sherry, booze--but well-integrated considering this is 13.4%, but the barrels are not really noticeable at all. Rich and complex, with a sticky, syrupy palate. A slow sipper -- this is extremely well-made.

UPDATED: JAN 27, 2012 Bottle, snifter pour
Appearance - Deep velvety red body, elegant bubbles and a vanilla head
Aromas - Raisins, cherries, chocolate and alcohol
Taste - Fig, pomegranate, molasses, smooth alcohol, earthy, dry

The mouth feel is thick - the flavor as well; lots of strong fruity notes with a solid liquor backbone are inviting. Finishes spicy and warm, and leaves the mouth full of fig and dry woody flavors. Whiskey is apparent, but blended well with the generous amount of alcohol.

Shared with my brothers in richmond when whalen came back! Beautiful dark brown pour with not much head. For such the alcohol content, it was very well hidden, and this was a fresh bottle! I can only imagine how this will mellow quite nicely as it ages. Such a deep rich dark fruit profile. Definitely figs and dates, with a large does of vanilla and of course a nice booziness. Very tasty brew indeed.

8oz draft into tulip. Pours a dark brown with thin off white head. This is a big beer with big flavor and aroma. Figs, whiskey, sweet caramel, fruits on the nose. Taste is a sweet, creamy mixture of whiskey, figs, caramel, oak earthiness. This is a big bold beer and I found the whiskey component to be delicious.

Poured from a 22oz bottle. Pours dark cola colored (like Dr. Pepper or Cherry Coke) with just a little red around the edges. Just a hint of head on this, but it is well carbonated. Aroma is very interesting with hints of fig, raisin, toffee, and some pomegranate juice. Taste is largely the same...very sweet. There is some tastes of pomegranates and grape juice. A very tasty offering.

Bomber. Poured medium-deep brown with a short, tight-bubbled beige head. The aroma picked up figs, raisins, dates, molasses, and a hit of dulce du leche, with sweet whiskey and a touch of black pepper around.. plenty of sweet sugars in there, and this could probably be interpreted 400 different ways. The flavor was sweet again, with dates, raisins, and very tasty rye whiskey leading.. spicy and a tad bitter on the edges, with warm, peppery alcohol, grainy oak, and earthy notes.. more grainy and spicy barrel character over a whole bunch of sugars on the long, decadent finish. Heavier-bodied with rolling carbonation on the palate.. the barrel did just about enough to cut through the huge sweetness.. the sweets held the boozage in check.. overall an excellent brew!

Whaaaats the deal with Genesis? Theres no Sonic, theres no Phil Collins, whaaaats the deal? Aroma of vanilla, dark fruits, molasses, and whiskey. Taste is very smooth and moderately sweet with a decent bittering finish. Overall this is a fantastic barley wine as my first offering by this Jewel of a brewery...

22 oz. bottle. Pours a very deep but clear amber with a moderate tan head that lasted beyond mid-glass and left a coating of foam with each sip. Huge aroma of vanilla, caramel, figs, and dates. The flavor is equally impressive again with huge vanilla, caramel, oak, figs, and dates. Holy crap! Rich and full bodied with a luxurious mouthfeel. Some mild alcohol warmth at the finish only enhances the experience. Definitely sweet, which is perfectly fine for me. I am planning on picking up a few more of these to put away in my cellar. Wow.
