3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark with a hint of a ruby, almost blood red. Small amount of head and powerful aroma of dried fruit and figs. Taste is malty sweet with fig notes. Overall a pretty good beer but nothing too special, maybe loses it’s identity with too many ingredients.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz. Bottle (Batch #1 of 791. Bottled 9/7/11): Got in trade from Phaleslu; THANKS Peter! Complex aroma of malt, toasting, roasting, burnt caramel, slight vanilla, slight Bourbon, rye, Whiskey, and wood. Poured brown/ruby in color with a small, creamy, dense, tan/brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Excellent lacing. Complex flavor is heavily sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of malt, chocolate, Bourbon, oak, caramel, vanilla, toffee, figs, dates, slight rye, brown sugar, and dark ripe fruit. Full body. Smooth, viscous, texture. Soft to average carbonation. Malt, caramel, Bourbon, oak, chocolate, vanilla, dark ripe fruit, fig, date finish is heavily sweet. 13.4%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22oz bottle, no date fromBeverages 4 Less, $12.99. Clear garnet with a one finger beige head, decent retention. Whiskey up front in the nose, with some old barrel oxidation going on. Some rich figgy raisin notes and brown sugar follow with a little chocolate behind. As it warms, I get a little toasted grain. Flavor has a fair amount of fruity notes, most likely from all the juices they added, otherwise has a good amount of old wood and booze, moderate brown sugar caramel sweetness. That said, this isn’t ungodly sweet, by any means. Semi-dry, bitterness peaked at a 3 at the back corners of my tongue. Never would’ve guessed this was >13%ABV--a little alcohol burn, yes, but not that much. Big syrupy body with low carbonation. Not too bad, and shows you that not all fancy >12%ABV BA beers need to be $30 a bomber.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from Bev 4 Less: Poured a medium leather brown liquid and was topped with a thick pillow of foam for a head. As for the aroma, a bold scent of caramel malts and other mentionable scents such as fig, raisin, prune, date, cigar, and a faint whiff of vodka or whiskey due to the already high alcohol by volume content. The drink is rich and robust with an initial taste of sweet sugary malts that come across as molasses or even maple syrup, but as for the aftertaste, there is a minor taste of astringency as if I were drinking some sort of medicine. Palate is smooth and very refined while also having a sticky residue in the finish. However, the combination of fruit juices and whiskey barrel aging has added so much complexity to a barleywine style recipe that I have to say this will certainly be one of the most memorable barleywines. Hands down Shmaltz/HeBrew brewing has become one of my top 5 breweries in the world.

On draft at Beer Revolution. Wow. This one really took me by surprise. It pours a muddy brown color with a khaki head. The aroma is powerful huge notes of toffee and maple syrup. The flavor is the same with a beautiful combination of maple syrup, bourbon, vanilla and dark fruit (mostly raisins and dates). The body was the only thing holding this back from greatness. Massively syrupy and impossible to drink more than a few ounces, but those few ounces are mighty enjoyable.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 oz. bottle, split 4 ways, pours a dark brown with a reddish hue and a small, quickly-dissipating tan head. Aroma of pomegranate, dates, figs, grapes, treacle toffee, and subtle rye notes, though not heavily pronounced on the nose. Flavour is extremely rich and complex, with the above-mentioned dried fruits, brandy / sherry, booze--but well-integrated considering this is 13.4%, but the barrels are not really noticeable at all. Rich and complex, with a sticky, syrupy palate. A slow sipper -- this is extremely well-made.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: JAN 27, 2012 Bottle, snifter pour
Appearance - Deep velvety red body, elegant bubbles and a vanilla head
Aromas - Raisins, cherries, chocolate and alcohol
Taste - Fig, pomegranate, molasses, smooth alcohol, earthy, dry
The mouth feel is thick - the flavor as well; lots of strong fruity notes with a solid liquor backbone are inviting. Finishes spicy and warm, and leaves the mouth full of fig and dry woody flavors. Whiskey is apparent, but blended well with the generous amount of alcohol.

Shared with my brothers in richmond when whalen came back! Beautiful dark brown pour with not much head. For such the alcohol content, it was very well hidden, and this was a fresh bottle! I can only imagine how this will mellow quite nicely as it ages. Such a deep rich dark fruit profile. Definitely figs and dates, with a large does of vanilla and of course a nice booziness. Very tasty brew indeed.
