15 Years and the bombastic beers blossom bolder than ever. The shtick ages so beautifully as well – some favorites from the Shmaltz vault: FIGS: “And their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked; they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.” -Genesis 3:7. POMEGRANATES: In Medieval images of a unicorn hunt, the captured beast bleeds from wounds of pomegranate seeds dripping blood red juices on his milk white body. Wild and uncontrollable by nature, unicorns could be tamed only by virgins. Once tamed, the unicorn was chained to a pomegranate tree. DATES: Song of Solomon 7:6: “How beautiful and delightful you are, my Love, with all your charms! Your stature is like a date palm tree, and your breasts like its clusters. I will climb the tree and take hold of its fruit stalks.” Psalm 92:12: “The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm.” Arab proverb: It is good to know the truth, but it is better to speak of palm trees. GRAPES: “Oh, when I was a kid in show business I was poor. I used to go to orgies to eat the grapes.” -Rodney Dangerfield. Genesis Chapter 15 promises many battles but also sacred covenants. Verse 15: “You, Abraham shall be gathered into the arms of your people and pass at a ripe old age.” To the torrents and the trials, the punchlines and the pleasures. Pours dark with a hint of a ruby, almost blood red. Small amount of head and powerful aroma of dried fruit and figs. Taste is malty sweet with fig notes. Overall a pretty good beer but nothing too special, maybe loses it’s identity with too many ingredients.

22oz bottle 1/8/12 (Binny’s Downers Grove)-41° in Snifter-Pours dark brown with a small tan ring for a head. Aroma of bourbon, dried fruits, vanilla, and sweetness. Taste of bourbon, vanilla, dried fruits, caramel, toffee, and sweetness. This full bodied brew is well balanced and hides the ABV very well. Another awesome brew from Shmaltz.

It pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is roasted malts and milk chocolate. Smells awesome! Can’t pick up any fruit scents or alcohol. Taste is off the charts for me - dark chocolate, raisins and roasted malt. I don’t notice the alcohol - don?t care. I’m trying to remember the chocolate bar that had raisins......can’t remember the name. That’s what this barleywine reminds me of. Beautiful now, aging can only make it better. Thank you Shmaltz!

22oz bottle, Batch 1/791 Cases, Bottled on 9/7/2011.
5 malts, 7 hops; Aged in Sazerac 6yr Rye Whiskey Barrels. Pours reddish-brown mahogany color, light tan foam. Heavy legs. Smells of heavy malt syrup, loads of sugar in the nose. There is also a good amount of booze in the nose as well. Fig, date, sugar, vanilla, alcohol aromas. Sweet flavor, there is a presence of fruit sugars like no other. Loads of chocolate malt, date, dark fruit, Whiskey barrel fruitiness. Date and fig is there! So is the barrel, a good amount of burn. Nice chocolate malt finish coats the palate after the burn has dissipated. Goes down like pure malt syrup with dark fruit puree. Very heavy bodied. It is hard to believe that there this is really a beer, as the distant cousin to the American Light Lagers(*sarcasm). Genesis 15:15, Heaven in a bottle.

22oz bottle, no date fromBeverages 4 Less, $12.99. Clear garnet with a one finger beige head, decent retention. Whiskey up front in the nose, with some old barrel oxidation going on. Some rich figgy raisin notes and brown sugar follow with a little chocolate behind. As it warms, I get a little toasted grain. Flavor has a fair amount of fruity notes, most likely from all the juices they added, otherwise has a good amount of old wood and booze, moderate brown sugar caramel sweetness. That said, this isn’t ungodly sweet, by any means. Semi-dry, bitterness peaked at a 3 at the back corners of my tongue. Never would’ve guessed this was >13%ABV--a little alcohol burn, yes, but not that much. Big syrupy body with low carbonation. Not too bad, and shows you that not all fancy >12%ABV BA beers need to be $30 a bomber.
