COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the book of Exodus, the ancient Hebrews survived 400 years of bondage before the ultimate supreme court dropped the 10 deadly Plagues on the land of the taskmasters and the head dictator, Pharaoh. Even then, only begrudgingly, did he Let My People Go. The freedom ride across, nay through the sea left a band of wandering nomads broke and suffering, no doubt with a profound hunger – and a mighty thirst. Enter the Manna: a glorious gift to nourish body and soul. Manna was said to combine the tastes of everything most delicious to each individual, depending on their desire. And as the Good Book says, Each shall gather according to one’s need and shall enjoy a double portion for thine chosen day of rest. Manna fed the entire tribe, but tradition suggests the righteous received manna ground in a heavenly mill, while the wicked had to grind it below for themselves. Hear o’ Tribe of Shmaltz – Behold: A celebration of the flower of the craft beer revolution! A golden opportunity to feed your inner hop head and rejoice in HOP MANNA, our newest delicacy of the modern He’brew Beer family. L’Chaim! Dry Hopped with Centennial, Cascade and Citra (Centennial and Cascade in Batch 4).

From the Shmaltz Brewing Company, this is the He’Brew Hop Manna IPA. Limited release in 22oz bottles, I was fairly excited to try this little guy. The label states that Hop Manna is dry hopped with Centennial Cascade and Citra hops, checking in at 65 IBUs and 6.8% abv. The Hop Manna pours a great straw-golden color, with quite a bit of fluffy off-white foam. There is a ton of carbonation rising from the bottom of my Unibroue-brand tulip glass. As usual, there’s a long story on the side of the label in tiny print that I don’t dare try to read after I start drinking. The nose is full of brightly floral hops, bitter at the core, but mostly floral and citrusy in nature. On the palate, this is much more subtle than some of the other IPAs I’ve been trying lately. The hops are definitely present, but not nearly as rough and bitter as others. The alcohol isn’t even noticeable, it’s seamlessly blended in behind the hops. The finish is not super-long lasting, but it does linger for a few minutes. Soft, smooth, flavorful, and quite drinkable. I like the Hop Manna!

Hop intensity with spice, citrus, and pine. Sweet caramel malt backbone. Burnt orange color, lacing, frothy head. Very bitter.

A dark amber malty IPA with lots of British character. There are plenty of spruce and citrus hops, but not a ton of bitterness and a mild aroma. Caramel malt and bread, pretty sweet for an IPA. A nice change of pace.

Pours a hazy orange with a fat finger of thick white head with great persistence and heavy chunky lacing. Nose is pine, citrus, tropical fruit, and grassy hops against a sweet caramel malt backbone. Taste is similar, with a blend of bitter hops and caramel malt. Smooth mouthfeel with medium body and an off-dry lingering bitter finish. Not bad, but not really the hop profile or malt balance I prefer in an IPA. The mango flavour plays slightly too dominant a role, and there’s a stronger sweet malt presence than I’d like. The hops blend loses its edge against the malt background, and though it’s hop forward, it’s missing the resiny sharpness I prefer.

Aroma is more sweet than hoppy with hints of honey and clove. Not a very strong or complex scent. Looks imposingly dark, almost with a great sticky white head of foam. Taste is a battle between pine hops and malt sweetness. I would say this IPA borders a little on the sweet side, surprising since it is only 6.8%. The most hop bitterness comes through in the aftertaste. Palate is good for an IPA, very well made. This is a good beer but I lean more toward the big Imperial IPA’s.

On tap @ Pizza Port Ocean Beach: Poured with a thick fluffy layer of foam head with a dark golden honey hue that looked similar to iced tea. Aroma is floral with a crisp and distinct smell of green wet hops that just ooze citrus and other plant smells such as flowers and pollen. The drink is much more balanced than the aroma fooled me to believe because of a strong malt backbone that supports a bitter bite of hops that brings out a hint of citrus, pine and some unknown spice. This sort of reminded me of Oggi’s/Left Coast’s Hop Juice recipe. Glad to see one of my favorite breweries, He’Brew, start to dabble into the realm of IPA’s.

Bomber shared pours a medium dark orange/copper color with white head. Huge hop nose with solid malt backbone. The flavor is hop forward and backward and everything else good. You can tell its dry hopped. This is a solid ipa with lots of great flavors.

Bottle from a sampler pack from Hop City. Pours a transparent amber with a thin layer of beige head. Arms of floral hops and oranges. Taste is upfront with the bitterness but settles into a nice citrus balance.
