At age 14, is Shmaltz Brewing still in the throes of adolescence?  After publishing Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah, a new small business saga, I’ll leave it up to you, Dear Reader.  As with many 14 year olds, this years Jewbelation is all about Hands, Hearts and Farts.  14 is the numerical value of the Hebrew word for “hand.”  The human hand contains 14 digital bones and 14 joints.  14 items to fill the Passover seder plate, narrating the Exodus of the Hebrews – “and with a mighty hand did the Revolution bring us out of Egypt.” Jacob labored 14 years to earn marriage to Leah and Rachel.  Over a lifetime, the average American spends 14 days kissing.  Valentine’s day, Feb. 14, dates to a pagan festival for the she-wolf who suckled mythical founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus.  14 lines structure a sonnet.  Romeo and Juliet unfolds 14 days before Juliet’s  14th birthday.  Carbon 14 dating proves the age of organic materials.  Woody Allen, now married to his once not-daughter and not a spokesman for American Apparel, received 14 Oscar nominations for best screenplay and directed 14 other actors in nominated performances.  14 Jews serve in the senate.  The current Dalai Lama is the 14th leader of the Tibetan people.  A hummingbird’s heart flutters about 1400 beats per minute.  Dr. Oz reported on Oprah that humans fart on average of 14 times a day.  At age 41 and in our 14th year of brewing, the numerical synchronicity will happen only once in my lifetime.  Here’s to being here now… L’Chaim!

Bottle. Dark coffee pour with medium tan head. Thick lacing. Big aroma of earthy hops, rich malts, dark fruits and alcohol. Flavor much the same. Big and rich with sweet sugars. Continue to love their beers. Ill lay 14 farts today in honor of this fine libation

Bomber, shared by Sevenhokie, thanks! Sweet toffee malt aroma with brown sugar and dark fruit throughout, delightful. Pours dark brown with a thin light brown head and nice lacing. Starts with sweet toffee and brown sugar sweetness. Finishes very smooth with dark fruitiness with a bit of booze at the end. Excellent strong ale with the alcohol hidden very well.

not as great as the sum of it’s parts. had this in the spring along with a couple of aged or barreled jewbilations, and it just didn’t do much for me. Not bad, but at a premium price, there are far better things out there. lots of sweetness, dark fruit, a little depth, and a little alcohol. small hop presence. and a touch of spice?"

Poured from bottle to glass. Dark hue with creamy ran head. Aroma is figs, malt, toffee, raisins, cola, vanilla, ethanol. Mouthfeel is good with full body and zesty carbonation. Taste is sweet throughout with a tannin dryness and ethanol finish. Overall this is an interesting brew.

Vintage 2010 : Huge sweet malt, dark fruit , creme bruelle, and some cellar aged "English-Styled" oxidation that mostly works. Faint anise seed, pipe tobacco, and copper along with a healthy dose of chocolate. More than a bit muddled however... Fans of Firestone Walker would like this more than I.

Rated on 4-28-2012 at Fort Wayne, IN Gathering and bottle provided by patrick767. This beer has a small smooth tan head that is fully lasting, dark brown opaque body and no lacing. The aroma is malt, chocolate, sweet, fruity, and alcohol. The flavor is malt, sweet, fruity, fruity, and quite boozy. The mouthfeel is soft carbonation and this is a full bodied beer. This is a boozy sipping beer with a good flavor. It is worth trying.

22oz bottle... All to myself. Seems like a higher than average fill on this bottle. First sip... Awesome, this is not a big boozy super sweet mess. I have a shot at finishing this. Very dark brown / red color. Thin off-white head. Little metallic, oxidization in the nose... Spicy flavor, good roast malts, little dark chocolate. Moderate bitter taste, moderate to bigger sweet. Some light alcohol bite and warmth at the end, but it’s pretty reasonable for 14%. Good chocolate, light coffee notes. Dark fruit. Bigger body, but not chewy. Kind of a slick texture. Lighter carbonation. The fact that I managed to chief through this whole bomber without much of a problem is a huge deal and earns this an extra point. Amazing.

Poured an amber color with aromas of rye and booze. Flavors are fruitcake with some toffee, caramel and booze. Decent beer but too much abv and real bozzey.

Pours a rich black in the glass. Aroma of dried fruits; figs, prunes and dates. Aftertaste is a bit like fruit cake, molasses and toasty malt. Sweet coffee like flavor with more of the dried fruits in the aroma. Overall, a really tasty brew. Thanks again to BarZigKin for his generosity.
