How could we hope to top last year’s Jewbelation Sweet 16 with its cupcakes, unicorns, & Satan’s Ferrari birthday cake? massive challenge. So for Year 17, we threw in a whole new dimension to our shtick – we built our very own brewery! After 17 years of contract brewing, our first Shmaltz Clifton Park batch emerged 17 months after the first draft of the business plan. Coincidence? Renaissance means “Re-birth” in French & Italian. In Buddhism, the concept does not truly translate as “reincarnation” but instead as “becoming,” or a “stream of consciousness.” 11 syllables structure a haiku. Shakespeare penned 17 comedies. In The Simpsons episode “Duffness” Homer sings “When I was 17″ about buying his first beer with a fake I.D. “I drank some very good beer. I stayed up listening to Queen, When I was 17.” In The Office, Dwight recites Rule 17 that all Schrute boys must learn: “Don’t turn your back on bears, men you have wronged, or the dominant turkey during mating season.” Knowledge and growth come in many forms. It is taught that Nirvana is only attained when the soul transcends cycles of rebirth. Looks like Shmaftz just isn’t there yet. So with 17 malts, 17 hops, and 17% abv,JEWBEL4TIONREBORNserves as another mark of our death as a contract brewer and proof of our conversion to a new life as brewery owner…… L’Chaim!!!

Bottle from ABC. Nose is pomegranate, molasses, sweetness, figs, marker, some roast. Pours a dark, dark brown, beige head. Flavor is sweet malts, figs, plums, hot alcohol notes, lightly roasted, intense. Not bad.

Opaque brown-black. Thin brown head that fizzes off quickly. Rich peat, prunes, dried dark fruit, licorice, molasses. Taste is smoke, thick brown sugar and molasses, tobacco. Bitter finish that burns in the back of the throat. All the booze is making my stomach upset; way too strong for me.

Aromas of alcohol, prunes, sawdust, orange peel (or is that my arm pit?). thick coffee w/ cream head on darkest brown. Flavors of alcohol, milk chocolate, licorice, lime & roast malt. Very creamy mouth feel. Too much. Quickly fiery in the stomach.

Draft. Pours deep brown with a tan head. Super rich and sweet, with dark fruits, toffee, rum cake, and caramel. Maybe a bit too sweet, but it works.

Still doing great things with super high abv brews. though I think they’re nearing (or past) the peak. Up to 16 they somehow continued to improve every year. This beer was still very good, and a ridiculously sneaky 17%, but takes a small step back from last years. Dark, malty, vinous...perhaps so much going on (dark frut, slight anise, earthy hops) that it loses focus, but it was enjoyed by all. Not 1 remark of damn that’s strong (or hot)

Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with excellent retention recedes to coat surface. Dark chocolate, sourdough pumpernickel, and dark pit fruit aromas. Thick and full with sweet caramel and soy sauce upfront turning to licorice and candied hot chocolate covered cherries in the lasting finish.

Bottle. By myself. Cuz I is dumb. A: Opaque black with a half inch cappuccino head. Lacing test passed. N: Coffee, licorice, molasses, cocoa, coconut, simple syrup, taffy, toffee, dark fruits. Charles and cotton candy. T: Big, cloying sweetness. A biting licorice bitterness. M: BOOZE. It is a 17 percenter, but still. Heavy body. O: Well, this is interesting. Not good. But interesting. 14 dollars poorly spent on this fake shiksa.

Shared this bomber with my brother and dad. Nearly black pour into a snifter, nice color and tan head. The aroma is indeed boozy with notes of malt and hops that are all over the map. Mostly sweet upon taste and not too bitter considering the massive amount of both hops and malt. The finish is boozy and lingering, we all loved it.

Almost black pour. Big tan head. Plenty of lacing. Chocolatey malt aroma. Malty taste.

Bottle sample at He’Brew tasting at Beer&Beyond shop. Brown-black with a beige head. Roasted malts and sweet fruits in the nose. Very sweet with dark dried fruits, chocolate, honey, licorice, molasses, bitter and very alcoholic. Medium-full bodied, smooth texture. Rich but too heavy and boozy.
