Almost black in color, at worst very dark brown. A very tall brown head. Big roasted malt, alcohol, and dark fruit aromas. Some dark chocolate, licorice, caramel, and molasses. A bit acidic in terms of the flavor and somewhat boozy. Lots of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and dark fruit. Some molasses, caramel, and licorice. Some okay flavor, but too heavy on the booze.

Not sure of it's an ale as much as a barley wine. Incredibly viscous and boozy. As a barley wine it's good, and I am not a big barley wine guy.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep brown brew with a ring of tan head. So much going on here - nose is boozy with dark fruit, molasses, chocolate, roast. Crazy sweet, the 16% is definitely there. I can see this getting pretty great over time. Brown sugar, roasted malt, dates.

Deep mahaganey color with a taset of molases cherryanda bitter coffe finish has a strong alcohol smell and taste that should mellow with age over all i would say this beer is worth a try definatly on its own and not with food. rated by the girlfriend.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with good retention recedes to coat surface. Sweet pit fruit, licorice and soy aromas. Thick with upfront dark pit fruit turning to soy before the hot lasting molasses finish.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a deep opaque brown color with a full tan head. Aroma is coffee, licorice, dark dried fruit and cocoa. Taste is sweet dark roasted malt, bitter chocolate, merlot, dark dried fruit, licorice, coffee and raisin jack. Alcohol becomes evident almost immediately after the taste begins and lingers as warmth long after the swallow. Very complex, with a lot of different characteristics too numerous to mention. Well balanced in spite of complexity, though. I suppose strong ale is as good a monicker as any, but very imperial stout-like also works. Something really different to be savored and enjoyed.

Last beer at Total Wine’s "Winter Brews" tasting class 11/30/12. Aroma is coffee, licorice, chocolate, and alcohol. Taste is sweet malts, though smoother than I expected given the aroma. It’s thick, with a long finish. I only had a sample size so didn’t get the strong alcohol flavor some critics have mentioned.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 2, 2012 Not much that stands out in the aroma. Pomegranate and booze. Very dark with dark tan head. Lots of lacing. Sweet malt flavor with so many flavors hard to pin them down. Lots of complexity, dried fruit for sure. This is surprisingly light bodies for as dark as it is but still has great flavor. Very good.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pour is a super thick black with a very small tan head. Aroma is super sweet with some chocolate, vanilla, anise and booze. Flavor is super hot with alcohol. Some of the chocolate malt shine past the booze but the alcohol takes over. This is a real heavy mouthfeel with a ton of alcohol presence. I’m glad I only got a 12 oz bottle b/c there is no way I am going to finish this. I’m done with this series.

8 ounce sample on tap at City Beer Hall Tavern in Davis, CA. The aroma is sweet and sugary with molasses and brown sugar notes. Slightly vinous nose as well. Ethanol is pretty well hidden. Pretty straight-forward aroma, though. Opaque black body with a creamy, light brown head and really nice lacing. Attractive beer. Starts sweet, sugary with some lightly burnt, roasted malts. Leather and tobacco flavors make a significant appearance in the middle. Becomes sweet, chewy, and sticky towards the end. Finishes with a boozy character. This is basically a mess of a beer that is rather cloying, and pretty much what I expected from this beer, given the brewery’s pedigree.
