3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 fiulijn (12179) - Malmö, DENMARK - JAN 7, 2013
Bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver It pours a oily black color with small head, brown, a bit fizzy, disappearing quickly. Aroma of roasted malts, some chocolate, and quite evident alcohol. It’s full bodied, the mouthfeel is round, with the malt of a barley wine, roasted malts, strong flavor of dark chocolate too; in the final there is some liquorice, salt, and quite strong alcohol feeling (but somehow acceptable knowing the real ABV); strong bitterness; salty dark chocolate in the final too. Excessive, inelegant.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 bhensonb (8981) - Woodland, California, USA - NOV 29, 2012
Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours very dark brown/black with a temporary, nearly chocolate, tan head. Aroma runs toward treacle and dark fruits. Quite full bodied. It has carb. Flavor is chocolate, then dark fruit, then moving on to chocolate and dark malt. Heat sneaks in once in awhile, but it’s not obnoxious. Much less heat than expected. Certainly not dry, but the sweetness is much more restrained than many barleywines. I think there’s bitter in the finish, but whether from burnt malt or hop? It’s fairly refined, and pretty tasty.

Bottle. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex toasted malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy dark complex bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations were exceeded.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Lubiere (8241) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 10, 2013
A dark reddish brown ale with a thin dark brown head. In aroma, beautiful dark fruits, molasses, chocolate, woody notes and licorice. Wow! In mouth, a smooth licorice laden vinous malt with plums, bitter herbs, ricolla, tons of alcohol, yet balanced. On tap at Datz, Dec. 9 2012.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 hopscotch (8212) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - DEC 30, 2012
Draft... Pours dark and clear with no head. The aroma is a fruity, caramely jumble of fragrances. Full-bodied and sticky with restrained carbonation. The flavor is painfully sweet, boozy and hearty with a moderately bitter off-flavor that I can’t quite nail down. Metallic finish. How many malt and hop varietals are too many? Oh, about sixteen, I guess.

Bottle from from LCBO. Deep brown- black pour with a tight brown head. The nose is lovely - rich and chewy with a heavy tarry aroma and some light spicy hoppiness as well. Bitter cocoa and some rye spiciness as well. A little bit of plumminess as well but it's malt-dominated. A touch of charriness but it's pretty nice. Peppery with a little bit of lingering bitterness. Pretty nice strong ale actually.

On tap at Hops and Pie poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of toffee, plum, raisin, dark chocolate and light carmel. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of toffee, carmel, plum, raisin and molasses with a smooth lingering molasses finish.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 BMan1113VR (7377) - Los Angeles, California, USA - APR 25, 2013
Bottle with label marked as "CA Edition". Pours with a black hued pour and a large and lasting deep brown head. Aromas are malty, biscuity, licorice, vanilla, iodine, chocolate, cotton candy, grainy, rye, dark fruits, plums, deep caramel, treacle. Lightly herbal, low ester, boozy. Summed up: Busy. Flavors are pretty sweet and pretty muddled with big chocolate, roast, coffee, tobacco, dark fruit, kiln coffee, boozy, medium ester, lightly fruity, lightly herbal. Busy and convoluted. A bit silly (especially when you look at the hop schedule on their brew sheet online). While they are at it, why don’t they try to ferment it with 16 different yeast strains? Silly. Huge body, viscous, warming. Medium carbonation with big alcohol.
Honestly it is a lot better than I expected (from a beer who’s recipe seems based more around a marketing goal than a taste goal).
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 daknole (7200) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - OCT 18, 2012
Dark brown pour, and a very small brown head. Aroma is sweet and very cloying. It has 16 malts and 16 hops, well the malts dominate big time. Sweet fruits, molasses, brown sugar, plums. 2 oz was MORE than enough.
