Gromit (450), Port Orchard, Washington, USA Jun 23, 2005 Very nice marketing!
Pours a nice dark brown with a bit of a head but no lacing.
Aroma is sweet; typical for a brown, with some darker fruits and a bit of a nut (walnuts?) scent to it.
Flavor is malty with the fruits and nuts as mentioned above. I torn between rating to style and taste here. It’s neither as sweet nor as, well, bland as I find most Browns. This has a nice balance to it.
Palate is thicker than the style, but I like it. It has more of a mineral feel to it than I’ve seen in any other of the style. Very nice. Overall, this is either mis-catagorized or is one of the best Browns I’ve had. It leans toward a Porter but has more character IMO. Worth seeking out.
Edit: I see that it’s brewed by Mendicino, which explains the quality. I think most people her at RB are biased agains Brown Ales, as am I; compared to my favorite beers this is an average beer, but compared to the other Browns I’ve had, this is exceptional! I’m not sure my rating (or most here) reflects that.
Beardface (257), Eugene, Oregon, USA Nov 27, 2008 12 oz bottle from the Bier Stein. Malt odor to this but nothing more, no depth or complexity to taste either, malt and very overly carbonated. Brown pour with bubbles and almost no head to speak of. Disappointing since I was hoping for something a little "bolder" due to the name. CaryTheDude (489), Ripon, Wisconsin, USA Nov 2, 2008 Crushed with Honkeybra. No nose whatsoever. At least there was no chlorine or poop. Very dry finish. Smooth drinking but completely unremarkable. HonkeyBra (509), Lemont, Illinois, USA Nov 1, 2008 Crushed with TheDude in Galesburg, IL. Bold is a misnomer for this brew, as nothing, other than perhaps the assertion that it is bold, is bold about this beer. It’s dark brownish. Has an impression of a head. No nose to speak of. Some sweet malt tones and maybe some caramel and nutty impressions, if I’m straining. Not impressed, wouldn’t touch this again. Rciesla (1136), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Nov 1, 2008 Draft at brewtopia in 07. Pours a brown body with an off white head. Sweet malty, nutty caramel. Light chocolate and ripe fruit. Beer was decent, the folks serving were something else. BeerLS (20), Bensalem, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 27, 2008 Smells malty, nutty, and raisins. Taste is chocolaty, very dark fruit, nutty, malty, not too sweet, a little thin. Good stuff, would drink again.
