COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A deep, bold nut brown ale beautifully balanced with rich dark malts and a complex hop character converging to reveal a simply enchanting elixir.

No expectations at all. Never heard of this beer. Pours a dark brown. Little to no aroma (it was pretty cold). Flavor has some suprising roastiness. Itís not too bad, but I wouldnít pay for it. Itís drinkable tho, and I could certainly drink a few of these if I needed to. I sampled this after drinking several larger beers, imperial stouts and such, so maybe I missed out on all the flavor this has to offer, Iíll have to revisit this brew.

Bottle (great label!). Very dark brown but clear enough that reds show through light. Little head with almost no retention. Very surprising fresh hops aroma above some general roasted and smoky notes. When chilled, the hops bitterness dominates the sweetness of the malt and the roasted aromatics and flavors. At room temp. the mouthfeel is impressively velvety, the hops are toned-down, and the dark malt and toasted grain sweets are boosted. Finishes, at room temp., very sweet, much like a thinner brown. A fine brew, but I wish the body were boosted a bit to improve its roundness.

Dark brownish red body with medium off-white head. Decent malty flavor. Not awful, but there are better out there.

Dark brown body that shows ruby when held to light. The head is light tan. The aroma is rich caramel and a little chocolate. There is also a definite vinous character. The taste is light malty coffee. There is also some light grass and a little bit of toast. A brown with more character than usual. Almost like a light porter.

Clear reddish-brown pour with a little off-white head. Sweet nutty aroma showcased some nice roasted malts. Pretty tasty roasted malt presence as well with some dark fruits. Citrus hops were well-balanced in there for the style. Light-to-medium bodied with a nutty-citrus finish. One of the better browns that Iíve had, and some excellent marketing.

Iíd like to be able to rate this higher but this happens to be a style that I personally donít like. The malts are well-roasted but are thrown together with the hops leading to a product which, although fresh and assertive, is nasty and negatively bitter in a subjective sense. Iíve had bad luck with a certain type of brown ale in the past and this is the epitome of that type -- itís an unofficial drainpour in fact (I tossed it), though generically itís a well-crafted product which brings it over the 1.0 in my book.

I got this one at Chips in the Outer Banks of NC. I wasnít particularly impressed but wasnít repelled either. It poured coppery brown and seemed to have either an oat or rye flavor laden in it.

Dark brown with a tan head. Sweet aroma, a nice roasted malt flavor with a touch of fruit. This is a very fine nut brown ale, will without a doubt purchase again.

Nice dark chocolate brown liquid with eggshell head. Looks like a winner. Very good beer!!! Can taste the malty, roasty flavor. This is much better than Genesis. Based upon its competition. This is one worth looking for.

Very nice marketing! Pours a nice dark brown with a bit of a head but no lacing. Aroma is sweet; typical for a brown, with some darker fruits and a bit of a nut (walnuts?) scent to it. Flavor is malty with the fruits and nuts as mentioned above. I torn between rating to style and taste here. Itís neither as sweet nor as, well, bland as I find most Browns. This has a nice balance to it. Palate is thicker than the style, but I like it. It has more of a mineral feel to it than Iíve seen in any other of the style. Very nice. Overall, this is either mis-catagorized or is one of the best Browns Iíve had. It leans toward a Porter but has more character IMO. Worth seeking out. Edit: I see that itís brewed by Mendicino, which explains the quality. I think most people her at RB are biased agains Brown Ales, as am I; compared to my favorite beers this is an average beer, but compared to the other Browns Iíve had, this is exceptional! Iím not sure my rating (or most here) reflects that.
