4.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Don’t know how this one scored so low, it’s beautiful, full flavored, malty with just the right amount of hops. The aroma is mild and it pours a dark cloudy brown with a frothy head. Honestly, when I’m drinking this I imagine it’s what Tolkien’s Hobbits or Dwarves would brew or what they might have had in old England. Well worth trying for fans of malty ales, gamers and Tolkien fans.

Nice roasted malt aroma. Has a bit of cocoa in the aroma and flavor. Full flavored nice brown ale. Bit of a bitter finish, but a solid brown.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
"Solid brew for a brown ale, but nothing too exciting. Slightly better than the average brown...decent body and carbonation, aroma and flavor slightly more robust than the norm. Malted chocolate, light nutiness, earthy hops, and a touch of bittersweet in the finish."

Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance – Pours a deep brown color with a one finger cream head. The head has a good level of retention, fading slowly over time to leave a decent level of lacing.
Smell – The aroma is one the lighter side for a nut brown. It does however have a nice sweet brown bread aroma, mixed with notes of chocolate and some nutty smells.
Taste – The taste starts out a nice blend of roasted malt and some caramel sweetness. A lighter nutty and cocoa flavor comes to the tongue more toward the middle in the taste. In the end some lighter bitter hop flavors of an earthy flavor come to the tongue and leave a roasted bitter flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is rather average. A thicker body would have definitely been better, as it would have played well for the roasted, nut and earthy flavors.
Overall – The taste is fairly nice; roasty, lightly nutty and bitter, but the other characteristics, mainly the mouthfeel take away a bit. Overall not too bad, but nothing spectacular either.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
I poured a 12oz bottle into an official Shmaltz goblet.
Appearance: Pretty chestnut/mahogany hue. Dark, but carbonation is visible. Pours to an average size, tan, foamy head which laces and retains fairly well.
Smell: Lightly sweet nose of milk chocolate, dark malt and hints of hops.
Taste: It takes a lot of chutzpah for an American brewery to not only offer a brown ale, but to do so on a year-round basis and make it one of your flagship brews. He’Brew Messiah Nut Brown Ale is just that for Shmaltz Brewing Company, and it’s a more-than-solid, exactly-to-spec example of the American brown ale style.
There’s a pleasant sweetness right off the bat as flavors of candybar chocolate, toffee and caramel are all noticeable right away. Though flavorful, they are not especially rich or cloying; it’s akin to the sweetness found in a standard cola. Some spicy bitterness through the middle that imparts a touch of dryness and maybe a hint of citrus, though it’s quickly obscured by even more malty sweetness on the backend. There is a consistent hazelnut flavor found in this palate, though it lurks mostly in the background. I get a touch of iced coffee right on the finish. Overall, this is a flavorful, well-balanced beer that’s quite versatile.
Drinkability: As tasty as this beer is, its true selling point is the high drinkability. The mouthfeel is on the thinner side, consistently crisp, and even a tad refreshing while it’s crossing the tongue. The aftertaste is slightly bitter, albeit briefly, and fades away after some time. At only 5.2% ABV, He’Brew Messiah Nut Brown Ale has quite a lot of flavor. Enjoyable as a standalone beverage, a dessert beer, or an accompaniment to a meal.
