Pours almost opaque black, with crimson edging. A full two-inch head of biege held steady for several minutes before falling to a dense coating on the surface. Nice lacework with plenty of sagging curtains of froth.
Aromatics are heavily malted and roasty with a decent hop accent.
Reminiscent of an aggresively hopped porter. Shades of raisins, toffee, and chocolate pull through the nose.
Mouthfeel is on the thick side of medium, a bit oily and drying.
The pallet is roasty and bitter. Dark roasted malts and bakers chocolate are the mainstay, accented with shades of coffee grounds and Oreo crusts.
Finishes warming and slightly acrid. Drinkability is only held back by a slight grainyness on the tongue and light heat on the throat.
Ughsmash (3148), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Oct 8, 2008 Bomber. Poured a lovely shade of deeper brown with a creamy initial cap of chocolate head.. looked quite nice! The aroma picked up chocolate as its primary character with some soy and licorice back there too.. the hops were present as a bright herbal and lesser piney notes. The flavor had a whole lot of rich dark malt character with caramel, soy, and molasses present.. bitterness was lighter and seemingly muted with herbal and coffee notes.. finished with more soy and some spices, but the alcohol was very much held in check. Thicker viscosity on the palate with an OK contrast between the dark malts and residual bitterness.. this was a solid offering! BeerHawk (801), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Aug 21, 2008 Bottle. Poured dark brown with a creamy tan head with some lasting and leaving good lacing. Nice malt aromas of milk chocolate, coffee, molasses, hints of roast and light alcohol. The flavor finds toffee with a hop background. Some roast comes out in the flavor as it warms. Medium body that starts sweet but ends bitter. Very nice. nuplastikk (509), USA Jul 22, 2008 500ml bottle....came out in late 2006 I believe, closet stored until July 22, 2008. Deep chestnut brown-black color, with a creamy head. This has mellowed exceptionally well, but I remember enjoying the beer when it was new on the shelf in 2006. Very deep malty flavors, very rich. Like a dark Barleywine in some ways, but with ten malts and ten hops it really captures a lot of the classic strong beer flavors. An excellent and fully respectable beer. Gains points for how well it aged. skoisirius (486), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 12, 2008 Woah now...lots going on here. Notes that stuck out were definitely the chocolate roasty bit and how it blended with with the hammered in bittered hops and sweet malts. Definitely can taste the ABV. Mellows out nicely with age. ScottB (44), Jacksonville, Florida, USA Jun 29, 2008 Wow. Big and complex. Huge chocolate/malt nose follows through in the mouth and is nicely complimented by notes of dark fruit. The hops deliver a nice tanginess at the end. Finish is slightly sweet, creamy, and very pleasant. This is a good beer.
