Commercial Description:
CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Clear dark amber pour with a foamy off white head. Lots of sweet malt in the aroma, with a touch of red fruit and hops. Sweet flavor as well. Malt and hops are balanced well with just a touch of the pomegranite coming through. Pretty good and very refreshing.

Medium amber hue with a thin ivory head. Aroma is slightly malty and nutty. Flavor has a definite tart pomegranate punch, some hop bittering, mor on the bitter side of life ant I like - would benefit from a bit more malt and floral or citrus hop flavors. As it warmed (or I warmed to it) it became more fruity and enjoyable.

Wait...a fruit beer above 5%! Yes! While there could be definite improvements, the big malt profile mixed with the slight pomegranate blend in the background go well for my palate. Hops over take the fruit a bit more than I’d like, but hey, they dig what they dig.

Bottle. Amber pour with an off white head. Aroma is lightly piney/floral with a grapefruit accent. Pomegranite is not overpowering, more like an amber ale in character than a fruit beer. Pretty good.

Pours a clear but dull light ruby with a thin bubbly white froth. Sweet fruity malt aroma with definite pomegranate and some citrus hops, smells sticky. This is a great fruit beer!!! because it is a beer first... then fruit second. The pomegranates merge so harmoniously with what seems like a rye ipa. The pomegranates add just the right amount of sweet/tartness for the grapefruit flavor. Glassy body, medium full, with smooth bubbly carbonation. This is a very very underrated beer.... [reminds me of dieu du ciel]
