Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

I’m not a big fruit beer lover. I don’t think I would have this again. Too sweet. It doesn’t have what I call drinkability,

Pomegranate adds some interest to this ale, which would be pretty good even without it. Deep gold with a touch of red; thick, creamy white head. Aromas of sweet malt, strong ale; pomegranate bitterness and flavor come out in the finish. Good novelty beer, though not very complex; not great for everyday drinking or fine analysis.

Tap @ The He’Brew Bash at the Blind Tiger NYC. I was fricking wasted by the end so some of these rates might be a bit odd. Hazy. Sweet and rosy. Much fruit liqueur. Not much of a finish but it does stay true to the POM aspect.

Bottle 65cl. @ Chriso’s pre GBBF Shindig ’09.
Clear medium orange amber color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, moderate to light light heavy hoppy, grapefruit, orange, fruity notes - must be the pomegrante !! not that I can spot it without reading the label. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090801]

Dark amber. thin white head. I was a little let down by this. I love pomegranate. The fruit is definitely there (though not so much in the nose) but I think the astringent hoppiness sort of makes you forget about the sweet juice. Tingly carbonation very smooth body. Alcohol is masked pretty well. If it wasn’t for the astringency, I feel like I’m drinking juice and seltzer. UPDATE: At the end of the bottle the bitterness doesn’t bother me as much. It tastes a lot more like promegranate/cranberry juice which I know is an acquired taste, but one that I love. I pushed it a few points.

No one here picked this out as pomegranate from the nose, bit murky, some fruit notes, a bit of astringency, a bit of fruit funk but nothing to get into. A ncie concept.

Pours a hazy amber with a white head. Smells of sweet malt and fruity. Tastes of caramel, some fruity elements, some peppery splashes on the finish.

Bottle @ pre-GBBF shindig, August 2009. Amber colour. Slightly cloudy. Some fruity notes. Not sure I’d spot it as pomegranate though. Sweet but quite acidic/astringent at the same time. A bit boozy too. Nothing too unpleasant about it but didn’t really hit the spot for me.
