iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Jul 1, 2008 22oz bomber, no date. Clear copper brown with a one finger yellowish beige head, fair retention. Has the sweet figgy notes of a dubbel with some sweet toasted nuts, brown sugar, toffee, and some buttery vanilla notes. The flavor is much grainier and nuttier with some brown sugar--the fig is present, but much more in the background. Semi-dry finish with bitterness peaking around a 2-3. Alcohol present, but just enough to notice. Light prickly carbonation with a smooth medium body. Started out very nice, but fell a little short for me. TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA Jun 30, 2008 22 oz bomber. This beer pours to a deep, hazy, brown color, with a small, tan head that fades, and a moderate to soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is wonderful, with lots of big aromas of chocolate, malt, nut, and figs. The palate is rich and smooth on the tongue, with big flavors of chocolate, nuts, molassas, and more delicious figgy flavor. This beer finishs with more excellent chocolate, nutty, and figgy flavors up front, then ends with a light peppery notes that take some of the sweet/cloying edge off this beer. Very interesting, very flavorful. I really loved the fig character of this one, as you really got it in aroma and flavor. An impressive brew, one to sip and savor. DenverLogan (421), MileHi, Colorado, USA Jun 29, 2008 Rich brown...small lingering head. Big aroma of dark roasted malts, molassas, caramel. Big flavors permeate the tongue with rich malts but some bitterness also. Notes of bitter chocolate, carob, nuts, bitter hops, figs, white pepper, other spices. marcus (1821), Sacramento, California, USA Jun 29, 2008 This dark brown ale poured with a thin brown head and an aroma of figs. The flavor is mostly chocolate with a chalky finish that resembles ripe figs. This is an unusual brew, but the taste is pleasant. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 28, 2008 Figs in the mash, an ale that not initially but after a whole emits a cuvee like aroma. It’s a sipper, it’s better with food. A brownish tinge. A unique one. SIgnificant carbonation, medium mouthfeel. thegreenrooster (1811), St.louis, Missouri, USA Jun 28, 2008 Pour is a dark red with almsot no head. Aroma is weird but good. Lots of fruityness with some sugar and i guess fig but i’m not sure what fig smells like. Flavor is a bit of dark fruit but over the top sweet. A different beer but a bit to sweet for me. This would be a good one to share as it is very thick and sweet. bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Jun 26, 2008 (22oz. bottle) Pours a hazy deep amber body with a small beige head. Aroma of fig, rotten apple, molasses, and pomegranate. Flavor of chocolate, roasted malt, figs, plum, and caramel. drfabulous (1212), Columbia, Missouri, USA Jun 25, 2008 Pure HeBrew. Malty. Syrupy. I can understand why some folks don’t like this. But when I’m done with a mediocre Japanese meal in a town that it’s too bad doesn’t have better Japanese food, I’m glad we get this beer. I like the sweetness. The difference between a 3.6 and a 3.7 for me is the slight taste of cola. Not good. Otherwise, solid.
