jjuf1853 (467), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Jun 24, 2008 Bottle purchased from Willow Bend Liquors (Lutz, FL) pours a clear, dark amber color with a thick beige head. Very unique aroma, it’s sweet but a noticeable aroma of figs and various spices too. Flavor is also sweet, dried fruit, and malts. Fair amount of bitterness in the finish. It is a nice and unusual flavor, but a little too sweet for my liking. Kinz (2179), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Jun 21, 2008 Pours a clear reddish amber, nice initial head fades away entirely. Aroma is of caramel malts, faint overall. Flavor is caramel malts with a hop bitterness on the finish. The bitterness comes through, but there is no defined hop flavor. There is also a bit of a cardboard note, bordering on vinyl. No fig came through for me. Not horrible, but nothing to get all excited about either. ogglethorp (882), Ohio, USA Jun 21, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark copper color with a thick tan colored head that quickly recedes. Aroma is caramel, some spice and figs. Flavor is caramel malt, fig, raisins. Palate is medium to full bodied, medium to mild carbonation finished sweet yet with a slight dry finish. Decent. vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Jun 20, 2008 Pours bronze with a reddish tan head. The aroma has dark toasted malt, fig, spice and plastic notes. Medium / full body that starts smooth, gets crisp and finishes with a shot of short lived explosive carbonation. The flavor starts with the malt and fig of the aroma & thankfully the plastic aspect is gone. It is somewhat sweet with pepper and dark cherries. The finish dries out a bit and gets sharper. Decent beer. goldtwins (4079), Nesconset, New York, USA Jun 20, 2008 Poured a hazed light ruby color with a small beige head. Aroma of spiced dark fruits such as raisins and figs. Mild banana mixed in. Fruity flavor that has a phenol middle and a fig and chocolate finish. Mildly sweet finish. Light to medium bodied with a light warmth. robertjm (399), El Cerrito, California, USA Jun 17, 2008 Pretty foamy head with lots of large bubbles, which collapse fairly rapidly. Color of red with a hint of orange. Slight hint of malt in the aroma, but nothing overpowering. Thick body and mouthfeel. A bit of alcohol in the flavor, but nothing major. I bought this because the label mentioned being made with fig concentrate, but I’m not getting any overly sweet taste. Probably all fermented out I suppose. I like it. Has Belgian traits, but still is unique in flavor. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Jun 17, 2008 Bottle: Aroma of plums, molasses, grapes, and faint banana. It pours a transparent garnet with a small off-white head that fades to a ring around the edges of the glass. The flavor starts with a plum and molasses combination. The finish has a moderate grape presence, faint banana, faint earthy bitterness, and a hint of alcohol. The alcohol flavor slightly increases as it warms, but never overbearing. Medium bodied with mild carbonation and somewhat sticky mouthfeel. Solid...surprised by the low score overall. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Jun 17, 2008 Tap at Barcade. Deep brown with a creamy tan head, quickly fading to nothing. Aroma is very rummy and date-laden. It’s got a brightly fruity character, some spiciness and a hit of molasses. As it warms, the plummy/rummy character comes to the fore. The raisin/plum character is pretty prominent, but I can’t say that it’s dramatically different from other beers where the date flavour comes entirely from special B malt. It’s still a pretty nice strong ale though. I suspect it will age pretty nicely.
