heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jun 9, 2008 Deep ruby brown body with a large light yellowish tan head. The fig smell is apparent along with some milk chocolate. There is also a little bit of mocha. The taste has notes of the figs with some old toffee. There is also some light green tea in the finish. A decent and interesting beer. Another hot day meant searching out something more refreshing. The solution was this novelty that I found at a store while on vacation. I’ve seen Hebrew releases before though this is the first that I picked up. After trying it I may sample another at some point. Even though Mendoncino isn’t spectacular they do make some good stuff.
Aroma / Appearance - A carbonated reddish brown body was lively. Cherry vanilla ice cream and fig newtons created a dual dessert aroma. Dry maple syrup wrapped it up well by providing a nice base.
Flavor / Palate - The taste fades fast like a simple ESB. While it lasts there is the taste of fresh Fig Newtons and Oreo crumbs. For a wickedly hot evening it was ideal to take the edge off. Beers like this remind me of the benefits of diversity across the country. bhensonb (4189), Woodland, California, USA Jun 7, 2008 Bomber from the Coop in Davis, CA. A great, or at least very good, place to seek beer. Pomegranate color. Sort of a beige smear for head. Medium dark fruit aromas - might be ripe fig. Near medium body with fizzy carbonation. Starts sweet and fruity (fig newton?). Lightly bitter. This is a weird combo which I have no recollection of tasting before. A little thin for the high ABV. Still, different is good. I can imagine coffee in here. Can you take seriously a brewer who never brews? Who always comes up with new strange stuff? Well, we better, cause no one else is coming up with crazy brews like these folks. Finish is damn near cola. Dry it’s not, but it has me believing it’s balanced. And the commercial blurb challenges the guys at Lagunitas for silly verbosity. I’m looking forward to the next release. PorterPounder (3133), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jun 7, 2008 Tallahassee, Fl. - Liquor Loft - 22 oz bomber - pours a very dark copper with a slight off-white head that disappears rather quickly. Sweet aroma with hints of cocoa sweet fruit. flavor is somewhat pleasant with hints of pomegranate, chocolate, caramel, and some nuttiness. Missing that "oomph" that a big beer such as this should have though. Mouthfeel is thick enough. No the best from this novelty series, but a pleasant diversion. badlizard (2326), Berkeley, California, USA Jun 6, 2008 bottle from Bevmo. Clear copper color with fizzy head. Malty aroma and taste with a nutty fig and and citrus taste that don’t quite work together. Beaver (588), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Jun 6, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours a ruby amber with a very creamy off-white head that retains fairly well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet caramel malts, figs, molasses, brown sugar and a little alcohol.
The flavor is some sugary caramel malts and strong fig fruitiness with some slight alcohol and a touch of a bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly watery with sharp carbonation.
Overall, it’s very one dimensional with sugary figs. Kind of ehhh for me, but could be awesome for a big fig fan.
