UPDATED: MAR 3, 2011 The aroma is fruity with yeast, fig, caramel, toffee, malt, and citrus hops. The appearance is brown with a decent head. The flavor is like the aroma and bitter-sweet. The palate is smooth. Overall it’s quite good.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Brown, with a touch of red. Small ring of foam. Aroma is jam on toast - kind of a mix of fruity and bready. Flavor is similiar. Fruity notes - fig, I guess. Pretty tasty, actually. Sampled at Raleigh WBF.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
The nose is caramel sweet with a little fruit. Flavors of heavy bread malt opening that are followed by a nicely hoped bitterness than finishes with raisin and fig sweetness. Overall, this solid strong ale is worth a go-round.

Bottle. Pours a dark reddish-copper color with an ephemeral loose light tan head. Mild fruit punchy aroma, some vague malt characters below. Sweet right away on the taste, a slight malty cast with a light sourish finish. The fruit character was too much like someone squeezed a juice box into a finished beer for me.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours dark cherry red with a small off-white head. Big sweet caramel cherry nose, figs, and cola. Flavor is similar, big sweetness up front, hops in the finish to balance. Coats the palate with a drawn out plum and fig flavor. Finish is a bit spicy that gives it a light dubbel quality, add some Belgian yeast esters and it would make an interesting dubbel/quad.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22oz bottle. Toasted bready malt and some astringent bitter hops initially greet the nose. Digging deeper, there are notes of vanilla, hay, dried grass and the smallest hint of tart fruit concentrate. Pours an attractive rich amber with bold mahogany accents. Bitter hops assault the tongue first. Bread crust malt, more drying hops, cola, alcohol and bitter pomegranate skin. Medium bodied. A lasting dry and tart fruit skin finish. Like most of their beers... unique.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
750ml bottle. Pours a deep ruby red with a thin, lacy head. Aroma is light, with hints of maltiness, citrusy hops, and maybe a bit of dark fruit. Taste is light and sweet, with notes of dark fruit, roasted malt, caramel, and an undeniable bit of fig building into a somewhat fuller and astringent finish of hops and warming alcohol. Deceptively light and fruity for a strong ale, but with pleasant spring-appropriate results.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Brilliantly mahogany in color with a quickly dissipating head. The aroma is light and somewhat aromatic - hints of molasses, pomegranate, and, yes, fig permeate.
Overall flavor is lighter than expected, but is subtle, yet distinctive, bearing notes of rye, yeast, stone fruit, and a touch of sweetness on the finish to leave a pleasantly light and toasty flavor on the palate.
Obviously a wonderful sipper, complement the fig notes with a fig syrup over vanilla bean ice cream.
