3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 HomeBrewHawk (441) - De Soto, USA - AUG 9, 2009
22oz brown bottle served in a Duvel glass. Poured a clear reddish brown with a thin tan head. Good malty nose with some dark fruit like raisins. Solid malt base with some toffee. Nice rich mouthfeel, medium body. Hints of Belgian yeast spicieness in the finish. Very easy drinking. Don’t try to classify, just enjoy this one. These guys do malt very well. Another unique beer from Shmaltz. They can be hit or miss with their experimentation, but when they hit, I tend to enjoy it.

650ml bottle pours an amber brownish color with decent off-white head that leaves little lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark fruits with some hints of chocolate and mild hops. Taste is malty sweet with the dark fruits and a mild hoppy bitternss. Medium body and moderate carbonation. An interesting doppelbock style beer which is recommended.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating (some time in 2009 though). Pours slightly hazy reddish brown color with a fairly dense 1-2 finger light khaki head with good retention that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some slight lacing on the glass. Aromas of plum, fig, date, caramel, molasses, biscuit, toasted malt, nuttiness, light chocolate, clove, and yeast spices. Some nice and well balanced aromas with good strength and complexity. Taste of big prune, fig, caramel, molasses, toasted malt, biscuit, chocolate, nuttiness, clove, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of dark fruit, caramel, molasses, biscuit, chocolate, and light spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Nice flavor balance and complexity; with no cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a nice creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Very smooth to drink for 7.8%. Overall this is a very excellent brew from Shmaltz. Nice complexity and balance; and very smooth to sip on. I really enjoyed this one.

Dark brown pour with reddish hue. Aromas of malt, bread, and raisins. Taste is sweet, light bitterness, some soy flavor. Overall, nice doppelbock though not my favorite style.

Bottle; poured a dark auburn/ reddish brown with a light tan head. Aroma of dates, dark fruit, caramel, figs, and maybe a whiff of wheat. Flavor was pretty much dominated by the dark fruit. A light touch of alcohol. Moderately sweet with a touch of dryness up front. An ok beer, but not really doing it for me.

On tap at Urge. Dark orangish red with a fizzy tan head. Caramel molasses and date aroma and taste with a date bread finish. A bit too sweet overall.

Draft at ChurchKey. Poured a slightly hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma was dates, sweet notes - light malts. Flavor was touch of sour fruit notes - dates, malts. Alcohol really hidden in this one. Was okay.

Bottle:   Deep copper, ruby highlights, moderate to large frothy light beige head, fairly nice lacing.
Soft bready nose, a little dark pitted fruit as well as Belgian yeast like qualities.   Smells a little like
a Dubbel mated with a Doppelbock.   Sweet soy sauce on the tongue.   Odd... soy sauce?!   Having a hard
time getting beyond that.   Soy and dark pitted fruit round out the backside.   This one isn’t as heavy and
mealy as their other examples, but instead has this odd sweet soy flavor.   Not terribly flattering if you ask me.
  Meh...
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 JoeZasada (255) - Beaumont, Alberta, CANADA - FEB 27, 2011
Bomber bottle. Pours a dark amber with a thick, lasting tan head. Spicy, malt aroma. Tastes very malty, a lot like a belgium ale - with fruit notes in the malt, and a spicy finish. Very good!
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 EithCubes (3340) - GERMANY - FEB 26, 2011
Bottle here in late February 2011. Nose overspills and immediately fills the room - tons of rich malt, tons of grape, tons of plum, and yes, probably date! Ayinger-like Doppelbock with a little lest bitterness and a bit more malt forward. Gradient chestnut pour with a sudsy tan head. Taste is bitterish but a light lagery sweetness comes out over the top, sort of unrestrained malty sweetness, heavy caramel with just a touch of booze, has a worty element. Full body, crisp and smooth, more Doppelbock than Dubbel, and doesn’t have nearly the minerally or yeast contribution that the next year’s bacth (10) does. A tad boozier, too. Dates are right on the money here - this is solid dark pitted fruit country. Yummy.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 jb (1602) - Rochester, New York, USA - JAN 12, 2011
The nose is a tad one-dimensional, sugary dark fruit. Poor is clear brown, a tad light and reddish. Thick attractive head. Feel is granular, full, sweet, with substance. Brown sugar + dark fruit. A tad of alcohol in that it warms a bit. Really good, just needs a bit more complexity to be great.
