Dubbel Doppel
How better to celebrate the evolution of the year than with recipes inspired by generations of the original craft beer warriors, the Monks! Top with a healthy dose of Shmaltz and witness the rebirth of Rejewvenator! "The winter of bondage has passed, the deluge of suffering is gone, the Fig tree has formed its first fruits, declaring all ready for libation." -Song of Solomon. Dates were used to sweeten beer in Ancient Egypt as early as 3500 BCE. Genesis 3:7: "Their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked; they sewed fig leaves and made themselves aprons." Queen Vic commissioned an 18" plaster fig leaf for her cast of Michelangelo’s David. "The statue that advertises its modesty with a fig leaf brings its modesty under suspicion." -Mark Twain. Under a fig tree, Romulus and Remus, mythical founders of Rome, were nursed by a she-wolf and worlds away Buddha found enlightenment. Zechariah: "Nations shall beat their swords into plowshares - all will sit with their neighbor under a fig tree, never afraid." Mohammed: "Whoever eats seven Tamr (dates) at breakfast shall rise above magic and poison that day." The Hebrew word for Date palm "Tamar" connotes a woman’s grace. "The only difference between a first date and a job interview is not many job interviews have a chance you’ll end up naked." Jerry Seinfeld. Psalm 92:12: "The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm." Thankfully all we need to do is pop open a bottle and rejoice... L’Chaim!

Bottle, shared with Grippitis, Parksy, and Faysal. Very deep ruby hue, quite lovely. Aroma is sweet dark fruits, yeast. Malty, darkly sweet palate, lots of figs, with a heavy yeast signature that speaks Belgian. A little on the sweet side to enjoy in great quantity, but a great one to share. Side note: Hebrew has the chit-chattiest labels out there!

Bottle. Dark brown with a fizzy tan head. Sweet caramel, molasses, toffee, banana, and clove aroma and flavor has a big burnt grain and clove finish. Medium thickness and the alcohol is noticeable. Thick sticky palate. Nice complexity.

Bottle: Poured a burgundy color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention. Aroma of dry fruits with loads of residual sugars notes. Taste is a mix between molasses, dry fruits, some plums and raisins with load of caramel malt. Body is quite full for style with good carbonation and light warming alcohol. Interesting but too sweet for its own good.

A clear brown ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet dark fruity malt with light banana, dark fruits, molasses, alcohol, nice. In mouth, sweet fruity caramel malt with dark fruits, molasses, Bock like, not bad. Bottle from Mike Perkins.

22 oz bottle shared by? Pours a slightly hazy reddish brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have quite a bit of dark fruits, figs and dates, some Belgian candi sugar and light spices. Some alcohol comes through at times.

Lovely dark red-brown tan head. Aroma of brown fruit, dates toasty wood. Tastes like sweet rye bread wide spectrum of malty flavors. Rich creamy palate yet only mid bodied. Booze is noticeable as it is in holiday rum balls. Tasty. I think the doppelbock inclusion is genius in making this dubbel lighter and more drinkable.

Pours a golden-ruby color with a light khaki head, leaves significant lacing. Aroma - caramel, toffee, fig, green apple. Taste - very similar to typical belgian dubbel with caramel notes, spicy, malty. There’s some fruit present but the dominant notes are the dubbel. Finish is pretty long and rich.

22 oz. bottle. Dark ruby in color with thin head in a chalice. Nose is a mix of Dates and fig juice. Damn, I just saw on the label they use juice from concentrate. Yeah, the flavor is mostly juice. Huge dates, figs and light candy sugar toward the finish. I don’t get and yeast flavors at all. Lingering dates in the finish. Maybe I’m just not a huge fan of Date juice. meh

Bottle from the holiday gift pack. Wow just realized the sh"malt"z pun. Pours copper, beige head. Nose of pomegranate/grapefruit, dark malt plum, pepper. Flavour is combination of plum malts and pomegranate and phenols...one of the strangest flavour profiles I’ve encountered in a beer, really clashes. Nonetheless, glad I tried it.

Bomber from Tacoma food Coop. Pours a dark, dark brown. Scent is a little boozy. A bit of a scotch scent. Taste is a little boozy. Taste some fruity trail mix. Good stuff.
