COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Since 2001, contract-brewed for Pabst Brewing (San Antonio), as Pabst no longer owns a brewery of its own. Special Export is brewed to be crisp and smooth with a true European taste profile.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2011 Wow, skunks ahoy. I guess my only question is which skunk did they get the thiol from. Special export means exotic to me which would be an imported skunk from Europe. However the brewer is in Texas which means they have access to the Striped, Spotted, Hognose, and Hooded varieties of skunk. Since my dog has been sprayed by the striped skunk and with my delicate nose I can eliminate this one. The hooded and hognose are lesser known skunks, which would qualify them as special, but their obscurity would make getting the thiols difficult. Which leaves the spotted skunk as the offender. It is not as well known as the striped, which everyone knows from the Pepe Le’ Puew cartoons, but still fairly populous enough to extract the thiols. The deciding factor which makes the spotted special is that it will do a handstand, that is right it can stand on its front paws so everyone can see its spots. Aaaahhh a special beer with a special smell from a special critter.

16oz can pours a pale golden with a large white head. Aroma is faint grains, malt, and hops. Taste similar to aroma, sweet, light and crisp. Might be one of the first beers I remember my Dad letting me sip off as a kid. Simple clean beer for drinking lots of.

Bottle at La Fonda in Eagan, MN. Light yellow gold pour with decent white lacing. Aroma and taste of grain and very slight malt. A bit skunky.

Bottle. Poured clear dark amber color with an average white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate balanced malt and hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium balanced flavor with a bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Not as good as the original GHB version.

Heileman’s Special Export has a very thick, white head and a clear, golden appearance, with lots of bubbles streaming up and some minimal lacing. The aroma is faint, but a stereotypical American beer smell can be picked up. Taste is fuller, richer, and sharper than the average American-style lager, and one gets grain, sweetness, and a relatively high hop bite here. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Heileman’s Special Export finishes crisp, clean, dry, and refreshing. Overall, I really like this one and recommend trying it if you ever see it. RJT

From a can poured a golden color with a fair amount of head. Grassy malty flavor with a quick finish.

More hop aroma and taste than most macro-brews. Pale gold color with modest head. Green bottle does seem to lead to skunking.

Member of the lower caste in beer society, and though I struggled, I drank it.

Poured a pale gold with a mild head that faded to fine lace quickly. Aroma was of grains and corn with a slight sweet hint. Taste was of malt, grains, corn and a mild - moderate hop finish. Palate was typical of industrial macro-brews - not bad, just typical. Overall, this was nothing spectacular but not bad either. Not suprisingly, it seemed very similar to Old Style.

Clear yellow, foamy white head. Dusty aroma. Sweet corn and metallic finish. One of the better macros.
