Special Dark: "wow...a Heineken CAN be drinkable. Not exactly earth shattering, but drinkable. I’m surprised. pours a pleasant brown/ruby, decent malty nose and flavor, if still a little light. as good or better than newcastle."

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a semi-dark red color with a light transparency about it to allow light streams of carbonated bubbles rising. The head was about a finger’s worth of white foaminess that dissipated within about a minute. Lacing was stringy and smooth. The smell had a fair toffee, light chocolate and a little bit of earthiness with a light apples. The taste was mainly sweet and bready. The apples come back slightly. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was somewhat sharp but still lending a decent smoothness about it too. Overall, this was a pretty good Vienna Lager I could see myself having again.

Heineken Special Dark bottle poured into pint glass. The aroma is very light but has the smell of coffee with chocolate undertones. Very dark but beautiful appearance with lots of frothy head. Tastes like coffee and chocolate one of the better dark beers.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into nonic glass. Appearance: 1" off white head slowly recedes with mild lacing. Color is a reddish brown. Aroma: mild aroma of molasses and whole wheat bread. Mouthfeel: light and refreshing, somewhat creamy. Flavor: chocolate, medium roasted barley, caramel, molasses with some grassy hop in the finish. Overall: a very pleasant dark lager. Nicely done.

Solid and drinkable, doesn’t have the skunk thang going. An early intro into the fact that there was something behind fizzy yellow beer.
