From the source at the Hellmuth brewery in Wiesen-Franconia (Germany). Pours an unfiltered orange color, bubbles floating on a very tick off-white cap. Nose: hay, grassy-herbal notes going almost tart-chicory, barley. Pretty fast it changes in a stable aroma, which I adore. Mouth: medium frizzy carbonation, malts, very soft (and neutral) herbal end. The drinking is easy with a watery body, but tasty enough.

Draft at the brewery in Aug. 2014: Deep golden in color. Creamy halo surrounds a broken cap of foam. Delightful nose of piecrust, nectar, lemon verbena, bright peach esters, cookie, hay and a hint of minerals. Lush, fluffy and soft carbonation. Richly malty and toasty from the get go, with a remarkably well defined Munich-derived honey-drizzled-biscuit base. Crisp pecan and refined pils malt enhance the mouth-filling maltiness, as does a saliva-inducing punch of melanoidins. Well-integrated orangey fruitiness dovetails with a lemony hop kiss to counterbalance the malty girth. Lemony Spalt hop luster is echoed by a polished zestful bitterness along with a splash of peach puree esters. A marmalade richness results from the soothing hop oils colliding with slick esters, which provide welcome contrast to the dry yet sturdy and multilayered malt succulence. Bright hop burps trail the assertively hoppy finish which is laced with vibrant lemon and wood-root-spice flavors. The brewer has commendably coaxed equal amounts of detail from both the malt and the hops, resulting in a very satisfying kellerbier. Love that Spalt character, which kept me returning to my glass only moments after the previous sip. Great beer.

UPDATED: AUG 13, 2014 Draft at the brewery in Wiesen. Lightly hazed bronze with a fine white head.
Clean nose shows orange-apricot-lemon hops, honey malt with a faint light peppercorn touch. Savory, filling mouthfeel, medium body, semi-sweet, moderately bitter, relatively low acid. Lip smacking hop oil juiciness is the hallmark of this clean Helles Landbier. The lemon-apricot character of noble hops shows well, the finish is juicy, long and satisfying, and the profile of the beer completely clean. A standout.

On tap at the brewery. Hazy gold lasting cream head. A cereally hell. Good though. Sometimes the cereal can become sickly but this drys out and leaves a good pale malt palate. Good beer. Maybe just a bit too under attenuated.

Süffiger und würzig-getreidiger Antrunk mit angenehmer, recht hopfiger Note. Der Hopfen setzt sich fort , wird aber durch eine aufkommende Wässrigkeit gehemmt. 10/10/13/11//11

Earlier Rating: 5/9/2009 Total Score: 3.3
Draught at the brewpub as Hellmuth Eierberger Urstoff. Fruity and spicy aroma. Hazy light amber colour. Small tan head. Distinct bitterness, OK cleansing, getting a bit rough in the finish. The flavour is fruity like the aroma, and also a bit spicy.
