Rastacouere (5202), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Nov 4, 2007 Clear earthy red offering over which stays a lasting off-white cover. The first feature to set this ale apart is unfortunately the strong butter note that manages to hide most of the underlying fruitiness. A feeble toasted maltiness quickly leaves the way wide opened for the apparently bright and drying leafy/earthy hops, but the diacetyl is in the way and removes any trace of crispiness to replace it with greasiness. The agressive carbonation tries to clean the damages out, but the situation is a bit too advanced for excuses to be healing. Too bad, because some potential can be felt if some juiciness and better extracted toastiness can find its way in. Glouglouburp (1876), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Oct 26, 2007 In short: Light watery fruity Ale. Sad.
How: One of seven glasses shared with WeeHeavySD. NOTE: This is part of the first batch of beers they brewed. Drank within a week of the brewpub opening. Things may (and hopefully will) change a lot. I will re-sample in a little while.
The look: Clear ruby-red body topped by a little off-white ring of foam
In long: The slightly watery body (a theme at this pub) presents an unfocussed array of fruit flavours. Tropical fruits, various red fruits, even strawberries. Some leafy hops. Comfortable carbonation. Short finish. As a light fruity beer it can do the job but as an Alt it is about as convincing as a blurry Bigfott picture from the 1960s.
WeeHeavySD (1564), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Oct 22, 2007 1st rating. Shared with Glouglouburp @ the Brew pub on its second night. Pours rosy red with a bright white head. Nose is sweet and actually a lot like an alt. Sweet taste, with a light malt edge, bitter back end. Not a favorite style but a decent attempt.
